Long-term trends in atmospheric rivers over East Asia

Ju Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the long-term trends of atmospheric rivers (ARs) over East Asia from 1951 to 2015. The results show a decreasing trend of ARs and associated precipitation over northern East Asia, while increasing AR activity and heavy rain events are observed over southern East Asia. These changes are driven by the warming climate and changes in large-scale environmental dynamics, such as the southward displacement of the southwest monsoon flow.

Monsoonal precipitation over Peninsular Malaysia in the CMIP6 HighResMIP experiments: the role of model resolution

Ju Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ability of 20 model simulations contributing to CMIP6 HighResMIP to simulate precipitation in different monsoon seasons and extreme precipitation events over Peninsular Malaysia. Models with higher horizontal and vertical resolutions perform better in simulating the annual cycle of precipitation and extreme precipitation, as well as the statistical relationship between precipitation and monsoon intensity in different seasons. However, an increase in vertical resolution may lead to a reduction in annual mean precipitation, limiting the improvement in the simulation of precipitation in high vertical resolution experiments.

Spatiotemporal Characteristics of Droughts and Their Propagation during the Past 67 Years in Northern Thailand

Baoxu Zhao et al.

Summary: This study examined the propagation and spatiotemporal characteristics of drought in northern, northeastern, and central Thailand. The findings showed that droughts mainly occurred after 1975 and were concentrated in the northern and northeastern regions. The study also found that the drought parameters and propagation were non-stationary and exhibited significant increasing trends. These findings have important implications for water resource management and drought mitigation in Thailand.

Dynamics of Probable Maximum Precipitation Within Coastal Urban Areas in a Convection-Permitting Regional Climate Model

Ju Liang et al.

Summary: The west coast of Canada is heavily affected by extreme precipitation events caused by frequent atmospheric river activities. Assessing the probable maximum precipitation (PMP) can provide valuable information for resilience building of vulnerable coastal communities. The study used a convection-permitting regional climate model to estimate PMP in Vancouver, showing an 81% increase compared to historical extreme precipitation events, likely due to increased atmospheric moisture transport and changes in atmospheric dynamics.

An Overview of ARTMIP's Tier 2 Reanalysis Intercomparison: Uncertainty in the Detection of Atmospheric Rivers and Their Associated Precipitation

A. B. Marquardt Collow et al.

Summary: Atmospheric rivers play a crucial role in the hydrologic cycle by transporting water vapor poleward and causing precipitation, but their detection in large datasets still contains a lot of uncertainty. By comparing different algorithms and datasets, they found that the results of detection tools vary in different seasons and datasets.

Climatology of atmospheric rivers in the Asian monsoon region

Ju Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the climatological characteristics of landfalling atmospheric rivers (ARs) in the Asian monsoon region from 1979 to 2017. The results showed that ARs contribute significantly to summer precipitation extremes in East Asia and South Asia, and their frequency is influenced by the El Nino-Southern Oscillation and Quasi-Biennial Oscillation. The study also revealed the connection between ARs and extreme precipitation, as well as the impact of ENSO-QBO effects on AR frequency in subtropical regions.

Precipitation characteristics related to atmospheric rivers in East Asia

Jinwon Kim et al.

Summary: Atmospheric rivers (ARs) play a critical role in shaping climate and extreme hydrologic events in mid-latitude coastal regions. This study in East Asia (EA) from 1979-2015 analyzed AR climatology, AR-precipitation characteristics, and regional variations. The study found that AR frequency varies seasonally with different characteristics in different regions, with the highest frequency in the coastal regions of the mid-latitude western North Pacific.
