Experimental and numerical studies on successive failures of two mooring lines of a net cage subjected to currents

Hung-Jie Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hydrodynamic changes due to successive failures of two mooring lines on a net cage that are subjected to currents using model tests and numerical simulations. The results reveal that as the second upstream mooring line fails, the mooring load of the lateral lines, vertical and horizontal movements of the floating collar and tube sinker, and remaining volume of the net cage obviously increase.

Reliability assessment of mooring system for fish cage considering one damaged mooring line

Hui-Min Hou et al.

Summary: This study assesses the reliability of the mooring system for an offshore aquaculture farm under the scenario of one damaged mooring line. The investigation includes the probability of failure under the accidental limit state (ALS) and the probability of progressive failure of the mooring system. The results indicate that the failure of one mooring line significantly affects the failure probabilities of the remaining lines, and the traditional reliability method without considering progressive failure overestimates the failure probability of the system.

Engineering Feasibility Assessment of Cage Aquaculture in Offshore Wind Power Generation Areas in Taiwan

Hung-Jie Tang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the engineering feasibility of cage aquaculture in the offshore wind farm area of Changhua, Taiwan. The study compares different types of net cages under typhoon and monsoon wave conditions and analyzes their submersible function to reduce the impact of waves. The yearly probability of remaining volumes of the selected cages is analyzed, considering the wave scatter diagram and tidal currents. The study also considers the influences of water depth and potential disasters related to the seabed sand waves. The results indicate that the selected cage aquaculture is feasible from an engineering standpoint in the study area.

Effects of mooring line breakage on dynamic responses of grid moored fish farms under pure current conditions

Hui Cheng et al.

Summary: This study utilized the program FhSim to conduct time-domain simulations to investigate the structural responses of fish farms when mooring lines break. The analysis focused on the tension distribution and buoy displacement resulting from breakages at different mooring lines. Suggestions were made for identifying broken mooring lines and predicting maximum tension increment, as well as improving mooring system design and monitoring operations to prevent fish escapes.

Experimental and numerical investigations of a mooring line failure of an aquaculture net cage subjected to currents

Hung-Jie Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of mooring line failure on an aquaculture net cage through laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. Results showed that when one upstream mooring line failed, the load in the other line increased significantly, but the system reached a new force equilibrium quickly. Additionally, significant yaw rotation of the floating collar of the net-cage system was observed.
