Size exclusion chromatography and stable carbon isotopes reveal the limitations of solid phase extraction with PPL to capture autochthonous DOM production

Gabriel Dulaquais et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the use of an extraction procedure involving the Styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer (PPL) sorbent for studying the origin and transformations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in estuarine and coastal environments. The study investigates the fractionation effects of PPL sorbent on the size class distribution and carbon isotopic composition of DOM, revealing that the sorbent strongly fractionates DOM and has a lower affinity for aromatic compounds of marine origin. The study highlights the limitations of PPL resin extraction and emphasizes the need for careful interpretation of data solely relying on PPL extractions when studying the origin and composition of DOM.

Static and dynamic sorption of DOM on Bond Elute PPL and Bondesil PPL sorbents: physical-chemical characteristics

Alexander B. Volikov et al.

Summary: The objective of this work was to study the sorption of dissolved organic matter (DOM) onto Bondesil PPL and Bond Elut PPL sorbents and its impact on the molecular composition of the isolated DOM using solid phase extraction (SPE). The Langmuir model was found to best fit the batch sorption isotherms, with sorption constants of 8.6×10(3) L·kg(OC)(-1) for Bond Elut PPL and 10.7×10(3) L·kg(OC)(-1) for Bondesil PPL. Logistic equation satisfactorily fitted the breakthrough curves, with a maximum sorbent loading of 13% (wt. dissolved organic carbon) for both sorbents. At low loading values (up to 4%), there was preferential sorption of low molecular weight aromatic DOM components, as observed by optical descriptors and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) measurements. However, the impact of loading on molecular composition was lesser within the range of 4 to 8% dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Given the high recovery values (70-85%) in this loading range, it is recommended to use SPE PPL-modified sorbents for DOM isolation from natural waters.

Dissolved and suspended organic matter dynamics in the Cape Verde Frontal Zone (NW Africa)

S. Valiente et al.

Summary: The Cape Verde Frontal Zone (CVFZ) is a highly dynamic region with large fluxes of sinking organic matter. The distribution of dissolved and suspended particulate organic matter in this area is influenced by the position of transects and different water masses, indicating the role of biogeochemical processes in shaping water mass properties. However, mineralization of DOM and POM is low, highlighting the importance of sinking fluxes of organic matter for mineralization processes.

High-resolution variability of dissolved and suspended organic matter in the Cape Verde Frontal Zone

Ruben Campanero et al.

Summary: In this study, the distributions of dissolved and suspended organic matter in the Cape Verde Frontal Zone (CVFZ) were investigated at high resolution. The results indicate that the input of Sahara dust and release of DOM from sinking particles are key factors contributing to the complexity of DOM and POM dynamics in the CVFZ.

Solid-Phase Extraction of Aquatic Organic Matter: Loading-Dependent Chemical Fractionation and Self-Assembly

Xianyu Kong et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a crucial component in marine and freshwater environments, playing a fundamental role in global biogeochemical cycles. The study found that increasing sorbent loading can reduce the extraction efficiencies of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), fluorescence, absorbance, and polar organic substances. Maintaining a similar relative DOC loading on the sorbent is crucial to avoid chemical fractionation and ensure accurate sample comparison.

Accumulation of DOC in the South Pacific Subtropical Gyre from a molecular perspective

Helena Osterholz et al.

Summary: The subtropical South Pacific Gyre contains the largest oligotrophic region in the global ocean, where dissolved organic matter accumulates in the surface waters. A molecular-level study revealed distinct characteristics of the DOM in this region, including high abundances of potentially labile unsaturated aliphatic molecular formulas and a low degradation index. Additionally, microbial utilization of nitrogen-containing DOM and extensive photochemical reworking were evident, reflecting carbon fractions relevant on different timescales.
