Advancing toward a more integrated aquaculture with polyculture > aquaponics > biofloc technology > FLOCponics

Luis R. Martinez-Cordova et al.

Summary: Aquaculture is a successful yet criticized activity globally. To achieve sustainability, it needs continual advancements. This paper presents the significant chronological advances in aquaculture, focusing on integration of multiple species for resource optimization. The characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and successful examples of various aquaculture systems are discussed. Compatibility between cultivated organisms remains a challenge. Evidence suggests that integrated multitrophic systems can replace polluting and inefficient monoculture systems.

Decoupled FLOCponics systems as an alternative approach to reduce the protein level of tilapia juveniles' diet in integrated agri-aquaculture production

Sara M. Pinho et al.

Summary: This study investigated the production of lettuce and tilapia juveniles in a Decoupled FLOCponics system using different levels of crude protein in the fish diets. The results showed that under 24% and 28% protein diets, tilapia in DFP grew similarly to those in traditional systems, while under 32% protein diets, fish in DFP-32 and BFT showed similar and better growth. Plant growth results showed no differences among all treatments.
