Using a deep-learning approach to infer and forecast the Indonesian Throughflow transport from sea surface height

Linchao Xin et al.

Summary: The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is a crucial link between the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans, and understanding its transport is important for climate systems. In this study, a deep-learning approach using a convolutional neural network model was used to reproduce the ITF transport based on sea surface height data. The model showed high accuracy in predicting ITF transport, indicating the potential of using deep-learning methods for forecasting.

The impact of wind corrections and ocean-current influence on wind stress forcing on the modeling of Pacific North Equatorial Countercurrent

Zhikuo Sun et al.

Summary: The correction of wind stress using scatterometer derived winds has a significant impact on the simulation of the Pacific NECC in forced ocean model experiments, weakening the NECC transports significantly. Considering ocean currents in the bulk formula also contributes to weakening the NECC transports. The double-counting of ocean surface current feedback on wind stress due to the use of QuikSCAT estimates may explain part of the simulation bias in the modeled Pacific NECC.

Multi-decadal trends in the tropical Pacific western boundary currents retrieved from historical hydrological observations

Shijian Hu et al.

Summary: This study used hydrological observations from World Ocean Atlas 2018 to analyze the multi-decadal trends in western Pacific Ocean circulation. The results showed significant strengthening trends in NEC, MC, and NGCUC over the past six decades, mainly contributed by temperature variations. Additionally, trade wind forcing plays an important role in the decadal trend of tropical western Pacific circulation.
