Does Preoperative Hookwire Localization Influence Postoperative Acute and Chronic Pain After Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery: A Prospective Cohort Study

Lingchao Kong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of preoperative hookwire localization-associated pain on acute and chronic postsurgical pain in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). The results showed that at 3 months postoperatively, the incidence and intensity of chronic postsurgical pain were significantly higher in the multiple hookwire group compared to the single hookwire group. Multivariate regression analysis further confirmed hookwire localization as a risk factor for chronic postsurgical pain.

Risk factors for persistent pain after breast and thoracic surgeries: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis

Joshua Lim et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the literature on risk factors of Persistent postsurgical pain (PPSP) after breast and thoracic surgeries and identified consistent factors. Understanding these factors can help optimize perioperative care in high-risk patients and develop targeted, risk-stratified interventions for PPSP prevention.

Comorbid Chronic Pain and Depression: Shared Risk Factors and Differential Antidepressant Effectiveness

William H. Roughan et al.

Summary: The study found a bidirectional relationship between chronic pain and depression, with chronic pain increasing the risk of depression, recent suicide attempts, smoking, and painkiller misuse. Individuals with comorbid chronic pain and depression experienced poorer treatment response to antidepressants, especially sertraline, escitalopram, and venlafaxine. Participants taking these medications specifically for chronic pain reported lower benefits compared to those taking them for other indications.

Persistent Incisional Pain after Noncardiac Surgery: An International Prospective Cohort Study

James S. Khan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence, characteristics, impact, and risk factors associated with persistent incisional pain in patients aged 45 years and older who underwent major inpatient noncardiac surgery. The results showed that female sex, Asian ethnicity, history of chronic pain, specific types of surgery, and postoperative analgesia were associated with an increased risk of persistent pain. It was found that persistent incisional pain affected daily activities and led to increased analgesic consumption, indicating significant morbidity.
