Indoor microbiome, microbial and plant metabolites, chemical compounds, and asthma symptoms in junior high school students: a multicentre association study in Malaysia

Yu Sun et al.

Summary: This study is the first to associate high-throughput indoor chemical profiling with asthma symptoms. The consistent results from the three centres indicate that indoor metabolites/chemicals could be a better indicator than the indoor microbiome for environmental and health assessments, providing new insights for asthma prediction, prevention, and control.

Effect of serum sample storage temperature on metabolomic and proteomic biomarkers

Erkka Valo et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of storage temperature (-20 degrees C vs -80 degrees C) on metabolites and proteins in serum samples were investigated using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and Luminex technology. A total of 193 metabolites and proteins were analyzed, and 120 were found to be unaffected while 15 were clearly susceptible to storage temperature. Additionally, the serum glutamate/glutamine ratio greater than 0.20 was identified as a biomarker of storage temperature. These findings provide valuable information on analytes affected and unaffected by storage temperature, as well as biomarkers indicative of suboptimal storage.

Characterization of the public transit air microbiome and resistome reveals geographical specificity

M. H. Y. Leung et al.

Summary: The study found that city was the main factor influencing differences in the public transit air microbiome, with diverse taxa driving geography-specific functional potentials. Bacterial strains in different cities showed variations in genes related to resistance and other functions. Human skin, soil, and wastewater were identified as major presumptive sources of resistome in the public transit air, with a significant presence of resistance genes co-located with mobile genetic elements like plasmids. Geographical specificity played a key role in shaping the public transit air microbiome, highlighting the need for global efforts to better understand this built environment.

Indoor bacterial, fungal and viral species and functional genes in urban and rural schools in Shanxi Province, China-association with asthma, rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis in high school students

Xi Fu et al.

Summary: The study found that the prevalence of asthma and rhinitis is generally higher in urban areas than in rural areas, with significant differences in microbial composition between urban and rural schools. Potential pathogens were more abundant in urban schools, and certain microbes were associated with respiratory diseases.
