Leila Benazzouz-Smail et al.

Summary: This study compared the botanical characteristics, phenolic composition, and biological activities of Nigella sativa L. (NS) and Nigella damascena L. (ND) seeds. The results showed that ND seeds exhibited better phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity. In addition, ND extracts improved blood parameters and exhibited antimicrobial activity.

Summary: The study evaluated the antifungal effect of thymoquinone against different Candida species and found that it had synergistic antifungal activity with nystatin. Thymoquinone demonstrated antifungal activity on Candida species and showed a synergistic effect when combined with nystatin, indicating potential as a combination treatment for oral candidiasis.

Oropharyngeal Candidiasis among Egyptian COVID-19 Patients: Clinical Characteristics, Species Identification, and Antifungal Susceptibility, with Disease Severity and Fungal Coinfection Prediction Models

Mahmoud A. F. Khalil et al.

Summary: This study investigated the causative species, antifungal susceptibility, and factors associated with oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC) among Egyptian COVID-19 patients. Candida albicans was the most common isolated species, followed by Candida tropicalis and Candida glabrata. Amphotericin was effective against all isolates, while fluconazole was effective against 61.5%. Significant variables from this study were used to create equations that can predict the severity of disease course and liability to fungal infection.

Overview on the Infections Related to Rare Candida Species

Sunil Kumar et al.

Summary: The incidence of atypical Candida spp. infections is increasing, largely due to the growing number of immunocompromised patients. Candida albicans remains the most common species, but there has been a rise in infections caused by non-Candida albicans species. Uncommon yeast species, such as Candida lusitaniae, Candida intermedia, and Candida norvegensis, have also seen an alarming increase in reports. This review provides a summary of the infections, diagnosis, treatment, and resistance of these uncommon Candida species, with a particular focus on the past decade. There has been a notable increase in the number of articles related to the incidence of these species. Additionally, several cases have shown suggestive antifungal resistance, especially with azoles, which poses challenges for successful treatment.
