Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Measurement Using Biosensors by Community-Based Village Malaria Workers and Hospital Laboratory Staff in Cambodia: A Quantitative Study

Bipin Adhikari et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare G6PD activity readings using a Biosensor by village malaria workers (VMWs) and hospital-based laboratory technicians (LTs), and to compare the G6PD deficiency categorization recommended by the Biosensor manufacturer with categories derived from a locally estimated adjusted male median (AMM) in Kravanh district, Cambodia. The results showed that the G6PD measurements by VMWs and LTs were similar, but the definitions of deficiency based on the manufacturer's recommendations and the population-specific AMM differed significantly.

A fluorometric assay to determine the protective effect of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) against a Plasmodium spp. infection in females heterozygous for the G6PD gene: proof of concept in Plasmodium falciparum

Angela Rumaseb et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the differential invasion rates of P. falciparum between G6PD deficient and normal red blood cells (RBCs) using an ex vivo model. The results indicate that G6PD deficient RBCs have a lower susceptibility to parasitization by P. falciparum compared to normal RBCs.

Variation in Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase activity following acute malaria

Benedikt Ley et al.

Summary: The study found that acute malaria significantly increases G6PD activity, creating clinically relevant levels of impact. G6PD activity was significantly higher during acute malaria in Bangladesh and Indonesia, while it was lower in Ethiopia. This suggests that prospective case-control studies are needed to confirm the potential risks of drug-induced hemolysis.

Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) quantitation using biosensors at the point of first contact: a mixed method study in Cambodia

Bipin Adhikari et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the operational aspects of biosensor deployment in the hands of village malaria workers in Cambodia. The results showed that skills using the biosensor improved progressively, and VMWs expressed confidence and enthusiasm in using the biosensor. Providing G6PD testing at the point of first contact can overcome barriers for patients and deploying biosensors in routine work of VMWs can expand and strengthen their role as healthcare providers in the community. However, VMWs also reported some practical difficulties in using the biosensor.

Malaria in Cambodia: A Retrospective Analysis of a Changing Epidemiology 2006-2019

Srean Chhim et al.

Summary: The overall incidence of malaria in Cambodia decreased from 2006 to 2019, with a significant decrease in females and the highest incidence observed in adults aged 15-49. There was a noted decline in P. falciparum cases, warranting the maintenance of an intensification plan, while interventions focused on preventing new infections of P. vivax should be prioritized. All detected malaria cases should be accurately captured by the national surveillance system to avoid misleading trends.

Implementing radical cure diagnostics for malaria: user perspectives on G6PD testing in Bangladesh

Nora Engel et al.

Summary: Healthcare providers and malaria program officers in Bangladesh have concerns about the introduction of quantitative G6PD testing, including technical issues with the device, high workload, and limited staff time. The challenges of implementing G6PD testing pose difficulties due to funding constraints and complex testing infrastructure, requiring flexibility and innovation to overcome obstacles. The study demonstrates the importance of maintaining visibility of malaria, P. vivax, PQ treatment, and G6PD deficiency in an elimination context, with the potential of new technologies like biosensors sparking ongoing debates about resource allocation priorities.

Muthoni Mwaura et al.

Summary: The study found that AlereLAM, although having point-of-care friendly characteristics, still requires more effort to realize its potential value and can help identify TB in HIV patients in certain circumstances. The initial communication about the low performance of the test by global agencies, restrictive eligibility criteria, reliance on CD4 + testing, and lack of advocacy and awareness were noted as reasons for its slow uptake.
