Estimating typhoid incidence from community-based serosurveys: a multicohort study

Kristen Aiemjoy et al.

Summary: This study evaluated whether new diagnostic serological markers can estimate the population-level incidence of typhoidal Salmonella. The results showed that the longitudinal antibody kinetics were similar across countries and not affected by clinical severity. This approach has the potential to expand the geographical scope of typhoidal Salmonella surveillance and generate comparable incidence estimates.

Detection of Salmonella Typhi nucleic acid by RT-PCR and anti-HlyE, -CdtB, -PilL, and -Vi IgM by ELISA at sites in Ghana, Madagascar and Ethiopia

Ursula Panzner et al.

Summary: We assessed the prevalence of Salmonella Typhi using DNA and IgM-antibody detection methods in Ghana, Madagascar, and Ethiopia. Our findings showed that the highest prevalence rates of infection were observed in non-febrile subjects, with site-specific differences. Correlations between IgM antibodies and participant characteristics were identified, with significant associations in different age groups and genders at various sites.

Performance of Immunodiagnostic Tests for Typhoid Fever: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Mohamad Ahmad Najib et al.

Summary: Typhoid fever, a life-threatening bacterial infection, requires specific and rapid detection methods. Serum and saliva are the main specimens used for testing, with anti-LPS IgA and a combination of anti-LPS/anti-flagellin IgGAM showing the highest sensitivity and specificity for detection.

Incidence of Enteric Fever in a Pediatric Cohort in North India: Comparison with Estimates from 20 Years Earlier

Bireshwar Sinha et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the incidence of culture-confirmed enteric fever among children aged 6 months to 15 years in Delhi. Despite a 35% reduction in incidence compared to 20 years ago, the study still found a substantial burden of the disease in the population. Continued efforts to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene along with novel vaccination strategies are needed to achieve disease elimination.
