Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on birds migrating to the island of Ponza, Italy, and the tick-borne pathogens they carry

Robert E. Rollins et al.

Summary: This study highlights the role of migratory birds in the spread of tick species and tick-borne pathogens outside their endemic range. 16 captured birds from 10 different bird species on Ponza Island in Italy were found to carry ticks, with some ticks testing positive for Rickettsia and Borrelia species.

Market characteristics and zoonotic disease risk perception in Cameroon bushmeat markets

Karen E. Saylors et al.

Summary: This article explores the importance of behavioral practices in facilitating zoonotic disease transmission at high-risk animal-human interfaces, with a focus on wild animal 'bushmeat' markets in the Congo Basin. By using a One Health approach, the study conducted wildlife surveillance, human behavioral research, and concurrent human and animal biological sampling to identify factors associated with disease emergence and transmission. The research, conducted between 2010 and 2019, included qualitative studies of bushmeat markets and highlighted the lack of understanding among market actors regarding risks associated with blood contact and animal infection. Suggestions for risk mitigation measures in markets and alternative strategies for bushmeat trade were discussed.

Tick species from cattle in the Adama Region of Ethiopia and pathogens detected

Tafese Beyene Tufa et al.

Summary: Ticks reduce productivity in farm animals and can transmit zoonotic diseases. A study in Adama City found four tick species infesting slaughter bulls, with Amblyomma cohaerens being the dominant species. The ticks were found to carry various pathogens, including Rickettsia spp. and Ehrlichia ruminantium, with medically and veterinarily important pathogens mostly detected in Amblyomma variegatum and Amblyomma cohaerens. These findings are important for monitoring and preventing the transmission of tick-borne diseases.

Detection of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus in blood-fed Hyalomma ticks collected from Mauritanian livestock

A. Schulz et al.

Summary: In 2018, Hyalomma ticks collected from four different livestock herds in Mauritania tested positive for CCHFV, with a prevalence of 2.56%. The study revealed the presence of two different CCHFV lineages and highlighted the importance of tracking the actual circulation area of this virus.
