Anticancer drugs in wastewater and natural environments: A review on their occurrence, environmental persistence, treatment, and ecological risks

Summary: The consumption of anticancer drugs has increased in recent decades due to the rising cancer incidence. However, their presence in natural environments and wastewater has received less attention. This review discusses the occurrence, persistence, and ecological impacts of anticancer drugs. The findings demonstrate that these compounds are frequently detected in hospital effluents, wastewater treatment plant influents and effluents, surface water, sediments, groundwater, and even drinking water. They can have adverse effects on aquatic organisms and alter microbial communities in soil and water, impacting ecosystem functioning. Better understanding of the presence and impacts of anticancer drugs is crucial for designing management strategies and protecting aquatic ecosystems.

Multi-target analysis of cytostatics in hospital effluents over a 9-month period

Summary: The presence and temporal evolution of cytostatics in wastewaters from a Portuguese hospital center were evaluated. A total of 129 samples were collected over a 9-month period. The study focused on 11 out of 13 pharmaceuticals, including previously unmonitored drugs like flutamide, mycophenolate mofetil, and mycophenolic acid. The results showed that all pharmaceuticals were detected in at least one sample, with bicalutamide and mycophenolic acid being the most frequently detected and concentrated compounds. Etoposide, classified as carcinogenic to humans, was also found in a significant number of samples.

Biodegradation of cyclophosphamide and etoposide by white rot fungi and their degradation kinetics
