Occurrence and bacterial loads of Bartonella and haemotropic Mycoplasma species in privately owned cats and dogs and their fleas from East and Southeast Asia

Aya Attia Koraney Zarea et al.

Summary: This study detected Bartonella spp. and haemoplasmas in cats, dogs, and their fleas from East and Southeast Asia. The dominant flea species infesting cats and dogs was Ctenocephalides felis, which played a key role in Bartonella spp. transmission. Cats had a higher risk of infection with both Bartonella spp. and haemoplasmas compared to dogs. Fleas were not found to be involved in the transmission of haemoplasmas.

Identification of ticks from an old collection by MALDI-TOF MS

Saidou Ahamada M'madi et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to find the optimal conditions for preparing tick samples with quality and reproducible MS spectra that can be stored for more than ten years. Among the four protocols tested, the ReDO and PReDO protocols show good results for the MALDI-TOF MS identification of ticks from old collections preserved in alcohol or dry. MALDI-TOF MS is a promising tool for identifying ticks, including vectors responsible for the transmission of diseases.

Yersinia pestis: the Natural History of Plague

R. Barbieri et al.

Summary: Plague can be transmitted through different routes, including fecal-oral, respiratory, and ingestion routes. Control of plague infection relies on early diagnosis, antibiotic treatment, and isolation measures. The disease has existed for at least 5,000 years, with well-established monitoring and prevention measures in Eurasia.

Poor vector competence of the human flea, Pulex irritans, to transmit Yersinia pestis

Adelaide Miarinjara et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that P. irritans is susceptible to infection but has low transmission efficiency. Despite sporadic transmission at later time points, the incidence of proventricular blockage required for this mode of transmission was low. Results suggest that P. irritans is a feeble vector compared to similar rodent flea species, especially when infected through feeding on bacteremic human blood.

Investigation of multiple infections with zoonotic pathogens of rodents in northern Vietnam

Le Anh et al.

Summary: The study revealed a high prevalence of multiple zoonotic pathogens in rodents in northern Vietnam, with Bartonella infection in 31.6% of rodents, Rickettsia in 24.8%, and Leptospira in 18%. Double infections were common, with Rickettsia and Bartonella co-infection being the highest at 40%, followed by Leptospira and Bartonella co-infection also at 40%. Triple infections were rare, with one case documented in a house rat species.
