The findings show that 82% of the collected water samples exceeded the permissible limit of arsenic set by the World Health Organization. Individuals who consumed arsenic-contaminated water for more than 20 years exhibited severe symptoms. Skin pigmentation, skin irritation, and numbness of the body were recognized as major symptoms significantly correlated with arsenic concentration. Enhanced biological antimony removal from water by combining elemental sulfur autotrophic reduction and disproportionation

Qiaochong He et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of autotrophic Sb(V) bio-reduction and removal coupled to anaerobic oxidation of elemental sulfur (S-0) for the first time. The results show that Sb(V) can be effectively reduced to Sb(III) by autotrophic bacteria using S-0 as electron donor, and Sb(III) then reacts with sulfide to form an Sb(III)-S precipitate, achieving efficient total Sb removal. The presence of nitrate inhibits Sb removal, while co-existing sulfate enhances sulfide generation and promotes Sb reduction and precipitation.

Summary: Although the effects of Sb contamination on surrounding environments and indigenous microorganisms have been studied, the impact of co-contamination of Sb and toxic metal(loid)s remains poorly understood. High Sb levels were found in topsoil samples near the refinery, while high concentrations of As and Pb, along with extremely high Sb contents, were observed in soil samples taken from greater depths near the landfill site. The study also suggested that microbial community compositions were significantly different in samples with high toxic metal(loid)s concentrations, with lower microbial populations, and that Pb may play a major role in controlling microbial community compositions at the site.

N-type diamond semiconductor induced by co-doping selenium and boron

Yanzhao Wu et al.

Summary: First-principles calculations were conducted to study the possibility of using selenium-doped and Se-X [X = boron (B), nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), fluorine (F)] co-doped diamonds as n-type diamond semiconductors. It was found that Se-doped diamond and Se-B co-doped diamond exhibit n-type semiconductor characteristics, with direct band gaps of 3.146 eV and 3.425 eV respectively. However, experimentally preparing Se-doped diamond is challenging due to its high defect formation energy, while obtaining Se-N, Se-O, and Se-F co-doped diamonds is also difficult because of their high defect formation energies. Fortunately, Se-B co-doped diamond can be prepared experimentally and is found to have improved electron mobility compared to undoped diamond, making it a potential n-type diamond semiconductor.
