State of the Art of the Molecular Biology of the Interaction between Cocoa and Witches' Broom Disease: A Systematic Review

Ariana Silva Santos et al.

Summary: Significant scientific advances have been made in recent years to understand the Moniliophthora perniciosa pathosystem, but there are still many unanswered questions regarding the molecular biology of this pathogen-host interaction. This systematic review presents insights at the molecular level by analyzing 109 eligible studies out of 1118 extracted from public databases. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the transition between the biotrophic-necrotrophic phase of the fungus for disease control and identify potential proteins and molecular markers for intervention and genetic variability analysis.

Comparative Genomic Analysis of 31 Phytophthora Genomes Reveals Genome Plasticity and Horizontal Gene Transfer

Brent A. Kronmiller et al.

Summary: In this study, the genomes of 31 Phytophthora species were sequenced, revealing variations in genome sizes, predicted gene numbers, and repetitive element content across the genus. The predicted numbers of effector genes were positively correlated with host range. Using phylogenetic reconstruction, 44 candidate genes were found to have been transferred parallel to the evolution of oomycetes and Phytophthora spp. These findings are essential for understanding the genomics and evolution of Phytophthora genus.

Eirene Brugman et al.

Summary: This study is the first population genetic study of Phytophthora palmivora in Indonesia, using microsatellite markers to analyze the genotype of isolates from Sulawesi and Java islands. The results showed high genotypic diversity of P. palmivora in both islands, with no genetic differentiation among populations. Human activities were found to facilitate long-distance migration of P. palmivora.

Chromosomal polymorphism of the Ceratocystis fimbriata species complex in Brazil br

Fernando Montezano Fernandes et al.

Summary: This study investigated the karyotype and genetic variability of Ceratocystis fimbriata isolates from different host plants and geographical origins in Brazil. Chromosomal polymorphism was observed, indicating genomic differences and chromosomal rearrangements in the species complex. REMAP analysis revealed high genetic variability and clustering of isolates from the same host. These findings provide new insights into the chromosomal diversity and genome organization of the C. fimbriata complex.

Multiomic approaches reveal novel lineage-specific effectors in the potato and tomato early blight pathogen Alternaria solani

Jinhui Wang et al.

Summary: This study identified the effectome of the necrotrophic fungal pathogen Alternaria solani using multiomics. The researchers found two main groups of effector proteins, lineage-specific and conserved effectors. Two specific lineage effector genes, AsCEP19 and AsCEP20, were likely acquired through horizontal gene transfer and played a crucial role in the virulence of A. solani on host potato plants.
