Host-associated and Environmental Microbiomes in an Open-Sea Mediterranean Gilthead Sea Bream Fish Farm

Grazia Marina Quero et al.

Summary: In this study, the microbiome of farmed seabream was explored using 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing. It was found that the microbiomes associated with different tissues of seabream were distinct from the surrounding environment. The gut microbiome was the most diverse, while the gill and skin microbiomes showed higher similarity to the environmental microbiome. The connections between microbiomes were relatively low among the host's tissues, but the gill and skin microbiomes were found to be the most connected. These findings suggest that the host is the primary driver shaping the seabream microbiome.

Temperature appeared to be an effective factor on growth performance of diploid and triploid turbot, Scophthalmus maximus, during the early life stage

Ilhan Aydin et al.

Summary: This study compared the hatchery and growth performance of diploid and triploid turbot at 16 degrees C and 21 degrees C. Different water temperatures during rearing had significant effects on the weight and length of turbot, with triploids showing differences in growth performance.

The Roseobacter-Group Bacterium Phaeobacter as a Safe Probiotic Solution for Aquaculture

Eva C. Sonnenschein et al.

Summary: Phaeobacter inhibens has been assessed as a safe probiotic bacterium for aquaculture, as it maintains antagonistic activity against pathogenic vibrios while having minimal impact on host organisms and microbiomes. Studies suggest that it does not pose a risk for antimicrobial resistance and can be safely used in aquaculture systems.

Evaluation of high-density tank cultivation of the live-feed cyclopoid copepod Apocyclops royi (Lindberg 1940)

Per M. Jepsen et al.

Summary: Copepods, particularly the cyclopoid copepod Apocyplops royi, are considered essential live feed for fish larval marine aquaculture. Studying its biochemical profile, size range, growth rates, and population composition at various densities revealed promising potential for A. royi in intensive copepod cultures and as a relevant live feed for marine larval fish culture.

Shrimp AHPND Causing Vibrio anguillarum Infection: Quantitative Diagnosis and Identifying Antagonistic Bacteria

Huiyu Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the temporal succession of shrimp gut microbiota during Vibrio anguillarum challenge, confirming the linear increase of pathogen abundance and irreversible disruption in the shrimp gut microbiota over AHPND progression. The predicted functional pathways involved in immunity and metabolism decreased significantly, while those facilitating infectious diseases enriched in the infected shrimp. 20 infection-discriminatory taxa were identified as independent variables for accurately diagnosing V. anguillarum infection, even at the early infection stage. Furthermore, several Vibrio and Pseudoalteromonas taxa were identified as antagonistic commensals of V. anguillarum, potentially serving as candidate probiotics for preventing AHPND.

Microbial transformation of distinct exogenous substrates into analogous composition of recalcitrant dissolved organic matter

Jie Lian et al.

Summary: The study found that while addition of different substrates resulted in changes to the initial microbial assemblage, after 90 days of incubation, the bacterial community compositions became similar. Revealed by ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry, molecular composition of DOM in all incubations became compositionally consistent with recalcitrant DOM and similar toward that of DOM from the deep-sea.

Phylogenetic analyses of Norwegian Tenacibaculum strains confirm high bacterial diversity and suggest circulation of ubiquitous virulent strains

Erwan Lagadec et al.

Summary: Tenacibaculosis, caused by bacteria of the genus Tenacibaculum, poses a major threat to marine fish aquaculture in Norway. Lack of clonality in outbreak-related strains hinders vaccine development, while high bacterial diversity and wide distribution complicate preventive actions. Understanding reservoirs and transmission pathways of these bacteria is crucial for addressing challenges in prophylactic measures and vaccine development.

Impacts of the Marine Hatchery Built Environment, Water and Feed on Across Ontogeny in Yellowtail Kingfish, Seriola lalandi

Jeremiah J. Minich et al.

Summary: The fish gut microbiome is influenced by various factors such as fish feed formulations and the built environment, with the gills and skin being more impacted by the surrounding environment. Diversity of the mucosal microbiome decreases with age in the gut, while being lower in fish from ocean net pens compared to indoor fish. Feed has a relatively minor impact on the microbial communities, while aeration equipment plays a crucial role in microbiome development in marine fish.

Summary: The study identifies a new species within the Peptoniphilus genus, named Peptoniphilus nemausensis, which shows unique characteristics compared to its closest relative Peptoniphilus coxii. It is a rare skin-associated species in humans, and the relationships within the Peptoniphilus genus have been further elucidated through whole genome sequence analysis.

Probiotic Yeasts and Vibrio anguillarum Infection Modify the Microbiome of Zebrafish Larvae

Orlando Vargas et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of two probiotic yeasts on the microbiome and neutrophil response in zebrafish larvae, showing that they can modulate the microbiota configuration, reduce inflammation, and enhance survival rate. Yeast pre-inoculation prevents changes in key taxa and metabolic pathways induced by pathogen infection, highlighting the important role of yeasts in shaping the microbiome and influencing the survival of infected larvae.
