Ethnobotanical investigation of Pistacia lentiscus L. grown in El Kala (Algeria), and phytochemical study and antioxidant activity of its essential oil and extracts

Nabila Souilah et al.

Summary: An ethnobotanical investigation was conducted among residents of El Kala, Algeria, using questionnaires. The study found that lentisk (Pistacia lentiscus L.) is commonly used in traditional therapy for gastrointestinal and dermatological problems. Analysis of the plant's phytochemicals revealed the presence of various compounds, with flavonoids and phenolic acids being the most abundant. The leaves of lentisk were also found to have high levels of total phenols, flavonoids, and condensed tannins. The essential oil extracted from lentisk showed a composition rich in monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. Additionally, the leaves were found to have higher antioxidant activity compared to the essential oil and standard antioxidants used in the study.

Correlation between Perturbation of Redox Homeostasis and Antibiofilm Capacity of Phytochemicals at Non-Lethal Concentrations

Michael S. S. Christodoulou et al.

Summary: Biofilms are a multicellular lifestyle of microorganisms found on various surfaces. Using phytochemicals at sub-lethal concentrations has emerged as a promising alternative strategy to control biofilms. Studies have shown that at sub-lethal concentrations, polyphenolic substances disrupt the healthy redox cycle in cells, leading to an accumulation of reactive oxygen species.

Summary: Pistacia lentiscus L. (PlL) is a wild-growing shrub rich in terpenoids and polyphenols, with oil and extracts widely used for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidative and antimicrobial activities. The essential oil of PlL contains components such as alpha-pinene and myrcene, with anti-inflammatory effects linked to the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines. PlL is considered a nutraceutical and therapeutic agent against a variety of diseases based on its properties against inflammation and infections.

Summary: The study found that Brazilian propolis has low MIC values against oral microbial species, while European propolis had slightly higher MIC values. Additionally, propolis was shown to interact with microbial cell walls and had a strong effect on inhibiting biofilm formation. Overall, propolis shows potential as an adjunct in oral health care products.
