Biomarkers of gastrointestinal functionality in dogs: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Ananda Portella Felix et al.

Summary: By conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis, we identified alpha-diversity indexes, dysbiosis index, modulation of key fecal bacteria, and the fecal concentration of propionate, bile acids, and calprotectin as promising biomarkers of gastrointestinal functionality in dogs.

iProbiotics: a machine learning platform for rapid identification of probiotic properties from whole-genome primary sequences

Yu Sun et al.

Summary: Lactic acid bacteria consortia are commonly found in food and some possess probiotic properties. This study developed a machine learning-based platform using genomic data to identify probiotics. Results showed diverse oligonucleotide composition in probiotic genomes and a bias towards genes/pathways related to probiotic function. The study also created an online bioinformatic tool, iProbiotics, for rapid probiotic screening.

Longitudinal fecal microbiome and metabolite data demonstrate rapid shifts and subsequent stabilization after an abrupt dietary change in healthy adult dogs

Ching-Yen Lin et al.

Summary: Diet has a significant impact on gut microbiota diversity and metabolite profiles. However, little is known about the longitudinal changes and their relation to host physiological changes. This study collected fecal samples from healthy adult beagles following an abrupt dietary change and found that the gut microbiome and metabolite profiles dramatically changed and stabilized within a few days after the dietary interventions. The changes were accompanied by functional changes and were highly predictive of the diet group.

Live Yeast or Live Yeast Combined with Zinc Oxide Enhanced Growth Performance, Antioxidative Capacity, Immunoglobulins and Gut Health in Nursery Pigs

Shenfei Long et al.

Summary: The study found that adding live yeast or yeast combined with zinc oxide can improve performance and reduce diarrhea rate in nursery pigs by enhancing their nutrient utilization, antioxidant capacity, immunoglobulins, fecal volatile fatty acid composition, and microbiota community. This could be a novel strategy to alleviate weaning stress in pigs and provide similar benefits to using antibiotics and zinc oxide.
