Response of soil denitrification potential and community composition of denitrifying bacterial to different rates of straw return in north-central China

Xiya Wang et al.

Summary: The results of this study indicate that the rate of straw return significantly affects soil denitrification potential and the community composition of denitrifying bacteria, with increasing straw return rates leading to higher soil DP and abundance of nirK and nirS genes. However, the a-diversity of the denitrifying communities remained unaffected by chemical fertilization and straw rates.

Long-term fertilization with high nitrogen rates decreased diversity and stability of diazotroph communities in soils of sweet potato

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: Long-term N fertilization decreased the abundance of the nifH gene significantly and altered the structure and diversity of the soil diazotrophic community. High N fertilization rates reduced the relative abundance of nifH-harboring microorganisms, especially potential N2-fixers like Cyanobacteria. Soil pH had a greater impact on diazotrophic community diversity and structure compared to soil organic matter and nitrogen forms, while soil available phosphorus content mainly regulated diazotrophs abundance.

The combined effect of short-term hydrological and N-fertilization manipulation of wetlands on CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions

Giuditta Bonetti et al.

Summary: Freshwater wetlands are important carbon sinks, but their conversion for agriculture and human activities can turn them into significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions. This study investigates the combined effects of hydrological alteration and nitrogen input on carbon and nitrogen cycling in wetland soils. The results show that both physical and chemical disturbances increase greenhouse gas emissions, leading to a significant increase in Global Warming Potential. The findings highlight the importance of considering the interactive effects of different disturbances when planning wetland rehabilitation.

Enhanced N2O emission rate in field soil undergoing conventional intensive fertilization is attributed to the shifts of denitrifying guilds

Mengmeng Ji et al.

Summary: This study found that under anaerobic conditions, soils with conventional intensive N fertilization (CNS) emitted more N2O compared to soils with reduced N fertilization (RNS), but this was not related to nitrate content or denitrification gene transcripts. Different fertilization regimes shaped significantly different bacterial communities, leading to increased N2O emissions primarily attributed to the reshaping of denitrifying guilds in their bacterial communities.

Predicting the influence of fertilization regimes on potential N fixation through their effect on free-living diazotrophic community structure in double rice cropping systems

Xianglin Dai et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the percentage of organic nitrogen substitution can reduce diazotrophic abundance at the same nutrient input level. Organic substitution regimes can reduce the fluctuation range of potential nitrogen fixation rate between early and late rice growing seasons. NH4+-N was identified as the primary factor negatively correlated with diazotrophic abundance, while the potential nitrogen fixation rate was positively correlated with soil C/N. Soil C/N and Fe2+/Mo were found to accurately predict the potential nitrogen fixation rate.
