A survey of the biosynthetic potential and specialized metabolites of archaea and understudied bacteria

Aya Galal et al.

Summary: Biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) are genes involved in specialized metabolite (SM) production and provide advantages to producing microbes. Some SMs have pharmaceutical importance, such as antibacterial activity. Mining under-studied microbes' genomes can contribute to the discovery of novel antibiotics.

Fucose-containing bacterial exopolysaccharides: Sources, biological activities, and food applications

Mengshi Xiao et al.

Summary: This review provides a systematic summary of the common sources and applications of fucose-containing polysaccharides (FCPs) and fucose-containing oligosaccharides (FCOs), as well as the bacterial strains capable of producing fucose-containing bacterial exopolysaccharide (FcEPS). The review also covers the structures, synthesis pathways, factors affecting production, and degradation methods of FcEPS for preparing FCOs. Additionally, the bioactivities of FcEPS, such as anti-oxidant, prebiotic, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and antimicrobial activities, are discussed, providing valuable insights for further applications in the functional food and medicine industries.

Inositol Nutritional Supplementation for the Prevention of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Jingshu Wei et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of inositol nutritional supplementation during pregnancy in preventing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The results showed that 4g of myo-inositol (MI) supplementation per day significantly decreased the incidence of GDM and reduced plasma glucose levels. It also decreased the need for insulin treatment and lowered the risk of preterm delivery and neonatal hypoglycemia.

Archaea Biotechnology

Kevin Pfeifer et al.

Summary: Archaea have significant potential in biotechnology, with advantages including the ability to be cultivated under non-sterile conditions, utilization of inexpensive feedstocks, and reduced cultivation costs. Some commercially available products from archaeal cell factories are bacterioruberin, squalene, bacteriorhodopsin, and diether-/tetraether-lipids, with other products like carotenoids, biohydrogen, polyhydroxyalkanoates, and methane in various stages of development.

Current Advancements in Sactipeptide Natural Products

Yunliang Chen et al.

Summary: Ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs) are a growing class of natural products that have benefited from genome sequencing technology. Sactipeptides belong to RiPPs and exhibit various biological activities such as antibacterial, spermicidal, and hemolytic properties, with an intramolecular thioether bond as a common hallmark. This review summarizes recent achievements regarding the discovery, distribution, structural elucidation, biosynthesis, and application prospects of sactipeptides.
