Rectal swabs are a reliable method of assessing the colonic microbiome

Greg Turner et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of rectal swabs compared to faecal specimens for colonic microbiome analysis. The results showed that rectal swabs had higher alpha diversity than faecal specimens, but the difference was only significant when comparing clinician-obtained swabs to faeces. Beta diversity analysis revealed that sample type had minimal impact on the microbiome. Additionally, only six genera were found in clinician-obtained swabs that were not also found in self-taken swabs. Therefore, rectal swabs are proven to be a valid and convenient modality for microbiome analysis.

Meconium Microbiome of Very Preterm Infants across Germany

Jonas Klopp et al.

Summary: This study characterized the meconium microbiome in premature infants and found that it was dominated by Bifidobacterium, Staphylococcus, and Enterococcus spp. The abundance of Bifidobacterium was negatively correlated with potentially pathogenic bacteria. The amount of bacterial DNA in meconium samples varied and was associated with the time since birth. Only half of the meconium samples contained sufficient bacterial material for microbiome studies.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of timing of antimicrobial prophylaxis on gut microbiome composition of term born infants. The results showed that timing played a critical role in the early microbiome composition of infants, but had no effect on antimicrobial resistance emergence.

Comparison of rectal swab, glove tip, and participant-collected stool techniques for gut microbiome sampling

Meghan I. Short et al.

Summary: Studies comparing different methods of stool collection revealed differences between home-based and office-based collection methods, with similarities in distance metrics observed within individuals across the three methods. The glove tip method showed similar gut microbiome results to rectal swab and stool microbiome collection techniques.

Summary: The study found that pre-enrichment methods significantly increased the detection rate of 3GCREB carriers. Additionally, stool samples showed a minor advantage over rectal swabs in both pre-enriched and non-pre-enriched cases.

Nurturing the Early Life Gut Microbiome and Immune Maturation for Long Term Health

Shaillay Kumar Dogra et al.

Summary: The early development of microbiome in early life is crucial for long term health, and is influenced by factors such as early life nutrition, maternal diet and cultural practices. Understanding and maintaining an age-appropriate microbiome through adequate nutritional guidance is essential for ensuring optimal health outcomes.

On the robustness of inference of association with the gut microbiota in stool, rectal swab and mucosal tissue samples

Shan Sun et al.

Summary: The study reveals differences in microbial communities among stool, rectal swab, and rectal mucosal tissue samples, and the inference of host phenotypes varies when using different sample types. Inference using stool or rectal swab generally gives significantly correlated results, while inference using mucosal tissue samples is generally less consistent with stool or swab.

The Mucosally-Adherent Rectal Microbiota Contains Features Unique to Alcohol-Related Cirrhosis

Ting-Chin David Shen et al.

Summary: Most studies focus on correlations between gut microbiota and diseases using fecal samples due to ease of collection, but distinct differences exist compared to samples collected from colonic mucosa. This study found interesting differences in mucosal microbiota characterized via rectal swab in patients with cirrhosis.
