MicroRNAs as Biomarkers for Coronary Artery Disease Related to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus-From Pathogenesis to Potential Clinical Application

Joanna Szydelko et al.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disease with a growing incidence worldwide and a higher risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD). Current diagnostic methods are inadequate for early detection of CAD, necessitating extensive research on non-invasive blood-based biomarkers. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) show promise as stable and easily detectable biomarkers. Aberrant expression of miRNAs has been implicated in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, linking T2DM with CAD. This review discusses the role of miRNAs in diabetic CAD development and highlights their potential as non-invasive biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

Fatty Acid Induced Hypermethylation in the Slc2a4 Gene in Visceral Adipose Tissue Is Associated to Insulin-Resistance and Obesity

Jan H. Britsemmer et al.

Summary: De novo lipogenesis (DNL) in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is associated with systemic insulin sensitivity. The decreased expression of Slc2a4, which is regulated by ChREBP and DNA methylation, in obesity and insulin resistance may be attributed to increased DNA methylation in an enhancer region of Slc2a4. The findings suggest that DNA methylation in VAT, induced by fatty acids, may play a role in the progression of obesity and insulin resistance.

Eirini D. Basdeki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between breakfast consumption and subclinical vascular damage in adults with cardiovascular disease risk factors. The results showed that regular breakfast consumption was associated with lower blood pressure, reduction in augmentation index, and thinner carotid intima media thickness. Breakfast energy intake of 10-20% of daily total energy intake was also negatively associated with augmentation index. The study concluded that a regular breakfast consisting of medium-energy density and high-nutrient content foods may promote better vascular health.

Benefits of Whey Proteins on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Parameters and Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases

Jean-Francois Lesgards

Summary: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality, as well as a major risk factor for early cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, walkability, and air pollution play a crucial role in T2DM development. Certain diets, like the Mediterranean diet, have been associated with lower T2DM and cardiovascular risk. This review explores the potential benefits of high-quality whey, considered a functional food, in preventing and improving T2DM and CVDs.

Oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes and related complications: Current therapeutics strategies and future perspectives

Summary: Type 2 diabetes is a rapidly rising metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction. High blood sugar levels lead to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress, which contribute to the development and progression of the disease. Antioxidants can neutralize ROS and maintain bodily homeostasis. However, the efficacy of antioxidant therapies in preventing diabetes is conflicting in clinical evidence.
