Oxygen toxicity: cellular mechanisms in normobaric hyperoxia

Ricardo Alva et al.

Summary: Oxygen therapy is commonly used in clinical and non-clinical settings, but high oxygen levels can cause cell dysfunction or death, with long-term effects on development. This review discusses the impact of high oxygen on cellular activities and pathways, as well as strategies to mitigate injury.

Research progress of glutathione peroxidase family (GPX) in redoxidation

Jun Pei et al.

Summary: Maintaining the balance of a cell's redox function is crucial for determining cell fate, and the GPX family of proteins, such as GPX1-GPX8, plays a significant role in combating oxidative stress and maintaining redox balance. Each member of the GPX family has a distinct mechanism of action and site of action in maintaining redox balance. Understanding the expression and regulatory mechanism of each member in the redox process is important for further clarifying the functional core of the GPX family.

Depolarized mitochondrial membrane potential and protection with duroquinone in isolated perfused lungs from rats exposed to hyperoxia

Said H. Audi et al.

Summary: This study used an experimental-computational approach to estimate tissue Delta psi(m) in intact lungs of rats exposed to hyperoxia, and evaluated the ability of duroquinone (DQ) to reverse any hyperoxia-induced depolarization. It was found that exposure to hyperoxia resulted in depolarization of lung Delta psi(m), and DQ effectively reversed this depolarization. This study is the first to measure hyperoxia-induced Delta psi(m) depolarization in isolated perfused lungs.

Bio-production of eicosapentaenoic acid from the diatom Nanofrustulum shiloi via two-step high performance countercurrent chromatography

Daniela Barcenas-Perez et al.

Summary: In this study, pure EPA ethyl ester was efficiently produced from Nanofrustulum shiloi biomass using high performance countercurrent chromatography. The process achieved high purity and recovery of the EPA fraction, making it a useful model for the efficient production of pure EPA from microalgae.

Supraphysiological Oxygen Levels in Mammalian Cell Culture: Current State and Future Perspectives

Ricardo Alva et al.

Summary: Most conventional incubators used in cell culture do not regulate O-2 levels, which leads to a higher oxygen concentration compared to the physiological conditions in human tissues. This review discusses the effects of supraphysiological O-2 levels on various biological processes and emphasizes the importance of maintaining physiological oxygen levels in cell culture to better replicate in vivo-like tissue physiology and pathology and to avoid artifacts in research involving cell culture.

Differential activity of human leukocyte extract on systemic immune response and cyst growth in mice with Echinococcus multilocularis infection after oral, subcutaneous and intraperitoneal routes of administration

D. Ciglanova et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of human non-immune dialyzable leukocyte extract (DLE) on alveolar echinococcosis (AE) using different administration routes. The results showed that oral (PO) administration was the most effective in reducing cysts weight, increasing lymphoid populations, and reducing myeloid population.

Beneficial and Detrimental Effects of Reactive Oxygen Species on Lifespan: A Comprehensive Review of Comparative and Experimental Studies

Hazel J. Shields et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that oxidative damage caused by free radicals can affect lifespan, with ROS levels and oxidative damage inversely correlated with longevity across different species. However, experiments have shown some contradictory results, indicating a complex relationship between ROS and lifespan.

Summary: The study shows that different cell culture media composition and oxygen levels can significantly affect mitochondrial abundance, network structure, and cellular energy metabolism in cancer cells. Cells cultured in DMEM generally exhibit higher glycolytic activity and lower oxygen consumption rates.
