Role of volume in small abdominal aortic aneurysm surveillance

Sydney L. Olson et al.

Summary: This study examines the predictors of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) volume growth and finds that baseline volume, tortuosity, maximum transverse diameter (MTD), current tobacco use, angiotensin II receptor blocker use, and history of diabetes mellitus are predictive of volume growth over time.

Serum total bilirubin and long-term prognosis of patients with new-onset non-ST elevation myocardial infarction: a cohort study

Yi Yang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential predictive value of total bilirubin (TBIL) for long-term prognosis in patients with new-onset non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). The results showed that higher levels of TBIL at admission may independently predict poor prognosis in NSTEMI patients. Additionally, TBIL was also associated with the severity of coronary lesions.

The Detrimental Role of Intraluminal Thrombus Outweighs Protective Advantage in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Pathogenesis: The Implications for the Anti-Platelet Therapy

Xiaoying Ma et al.

Summary: Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a common cardiovascular disease with a need for improved treatment options. The role of intraluminal thrombus and platelets in the growth and rupture of AAA has been recognized. Pharmaceutical interventions, such as anti-platelet therapies, are being explored as potential strategies for early AAA.

Pharmacotherapies and Aortic Heme Oxygenase-1 Expression in Patients with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Anja Hofmann et al.

Summary: Diuretics show the strongest association with HO-1 expression. The combination of ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and beta-blockers with diuretics is also associated with an increase in HO-1 mRNA expression. Statin therapy is negatively correlated with HO-1 expression.

Induction of Heme Oxygenase-1 Is Linked to the Severity of Disease in Human Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Anja Hofmann et al.

Summary: Aortic expression of HO-1 was found to be increased in both elective open repair (eAAA) and rupture (rAAA) cases. The severity of disease was positively correlated with HO-1 induction, but also connected to lower oxidative stress and protection of blood vessels.

Bilirubin as a Therapeutic Molecule: Challenges and Opportunities

Christopher A. Adin

Summary: Serum free bilirubin concentration has significant effects on morbidity and mortality in major health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity/metabolic syndrome. Challenges in using bilirubin as a therapeutic agent in human patients include poor solubility, complex molecular structure, and concerns about animal-derived sources. However, advancements in drug delivery, biosynthetic strategies, and drug synthesis offer new possibilities for applying bilirubin as a pharmaceutical agent.

The diverse functionality of NQO1 and its roles in redox control

David Ross et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the various roles of NQO1 in cell defense and cellular stress, as well as its potential roles in redox control. The interest in NQO1 lies in its inducibility during cellular stress and its involvement in redox processes. Both exogenous and endogenous substrates for NQO1 have been identified, with active research being conducted on compounds activated by NQO1 and NQO1-targeted drug delivery.
