Neuromedin U Induces Pulmonary ILC2 Activation via the NMUR1 Pathway during Acute Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection

Weiwei Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that RSV infection induces the production of a neurotransmitter, neuromedin U (NMU), in the lungs and upregulates the expression of NMUR1 on ILC2s. NMU exacerbates RSV-induced airway inflammation by promoting the proliferation and activation of pulmonary ILC2s. These findings highlight the critical regulatory effects of neurotransmitters on antiviral, inflammatory, and tissue homeostasis during viral respiratory infections.

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis: A review

J. P. E. White et al.

Summary: Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a rare inflammatory disease characterized by late-onset asthma, eosinophilia, and vasculitis. It is different from other anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV) and has a unique pathophysiology. There is currently no standard therapy for EGPA, and further research is needed to understand its complex pathogenesis and develop more effective treatment options.

Asthma phenotypes, associated comorbidities, and long-term symptoms in COVID-19

Lauren E. Eggert et al.

Summary: The study found that asthma is not a risk factor for more severe COVID-19 disease, with allergic asthmatics having a lower risk of hospitalization compared with non-allergic asthmatics. Lower levels of eosinophil counts were associated with a more severe COVID-19 disease trajectory. Recovery time was similar among asthmatics and non-asthmatics, with over 50% of patients reporting ongoing lower respiratory symptoms three months post-infection.

TLR3-driven IFN-β antagonizes STAT5-activating cytokines and suppresses innate type 2 response in the lung

Rinna Tei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the immunologic mechanisms involved in the regulation of lung innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) and suggests that interferon-beta (IFN-beta) can inhibit the survival and effector functions of lung ILC2s, providing a potential new strategy for treating diseases associated with ILC2s.

Neuromedin U promotes human type 2 immune responses

Yuan Ye et al.

Summary: This study investigated the expression of neuromedin U (NmU) in human blood and airways, and its receptors in human immune cells. The results showed that NmU was found in both blood and airways, with higher concentrations in the latter. The NmU receptor 1 (NmUR1) was expressed by most human immune cells, especially type 2 cells, and its expression was upregulated in lung-resident and activated type 2 cells. NmU was found to induce type 2 cytokine production and cell migration in type 2 lymphocytes, including eosinophils, and enhance the type 2 immune response to other stimuli.
