Serum markers of fibrosis, cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in hemodialysis patients: the AURORA trial

Madonna Salib et al.

Summary: In dialysis patients, concurrent elevation of procollagen type I C-terminal pro-peptide (PICP) and galectin-3 (Gal-3) concentrations is associated with higher cardiovascular mortality rates, suggesting that these biomarkers may contribute to risk stratification and cardiovascular protection in such patients.

Summary: This study found that dynamic products of COL3 formation and degradation were independently associated with CKD progression and mortality, providing the opportunity to link pathological processes with targeted treatments against fibrosis.

Summary: This study found a significant association between plasma P3NP levels and baseline and 7-year changes in physical function among participants in the Long Life Family Study, suggesting that P3NP may serve as a strong biomarker for current and future physical function.

MicroRNA targets and biomarker validation for diabetes-associated cardiac fibrosis

Zhu-Qiu Jin

Summary: Cardiac fibrosis, a main characteristic of diabetic cardiomyopathy, is influenced by multiple signaling pathways, with TGF-beta/Smad2/3 pathway playing a central role. miRNAs, stable molecules involved in gene silencing, are dysregulated in the diabetic heart, promoting or inhibiting cardiac fibrosis by targeting various pathways in different cardiac cells. Detection of miRNAs in plasma or serum could potentially serve as biomarkers for diabetes mellitus or heart failure diagnosis, providing insight into the pathogenesis of cardiac fibrosis.

Hyperuricemia and chronic kidney disease: to treat or not to treat

Federica Piani et al.

Summary: Hyperuricemia is common in CKD and may cause kidney damage, but causal relationship between uric acid and CKD remains unclear. Experimental studies suggest uric acid can lead to kidney injury.
