The land-scape of immune response to monkeypox virus

Heng Li et al.

Summary: Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus, and it has become a major public health threat. The immune response to the virus plays a crucial role in disease pathogenesis and clinical manifestations, leading to skin lesions, sepsis, respiratory disease, and damage to immune organs. The immunopathogenesis of monkeypox involves impaired NK-cell function, immune evasion, cytokine storm, and antibody-dependent enhancement, among other factors. Understanding the immunopathology of monkeypox is important for developing immunotherapeutic strategies against the disease.

Monkeypox (MPOX)-Related Knowledge and Vaccination Hesitancy in Non-Endemic Countries: Concise Literature Review

Mohamed Lounis et al.

Summary: In May 2022, human monkeypox (MPOX), a new zoonotic viral disease, emerged in multiple non-endemic countries. This literature review examined studies on MPOX-related knowledge, awareness, and vaccination attitudes. The results indicated inadequate levels of knowledge and awareness among certain groups. Vaccine hesitancy was common among healthcare professionals, except for Chinese healthcare professionals, with a vaccine acceptance rate of 90.1%. This review provides insights into the initial months of MPOX emergence and the evolution of knowledge, awareness, and vaccine hesitancy.

Preventing monkeypox outbreaks: Focus on diagnosis, care, treatment, and vaccination

Moslem Ghaseminia

Summary: The first case of human monkeypox virus (Mpox) was reported in 1970, and its transmission was initially limited. However, sporadic infections occurred over the years, especially through contaminated individuals and human-to-human transmission. Recently, with the decline of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mpox outbreaks have been observed in multiple countries. Understanding the diagnosis, treatment, patient care, and vaccination strategies are essential for controlling the spread of this viral infection. Although specific drugs for Mpox are not available, previous studies suggest the potential use of drugs and vaccines developed for smallpox.

Community transmission of monkeypox in the United Kingdom, April to May 2022

Roberto Vivancos et al.

Summary: Between 7 and 25 May, 86 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the UK, with only one case known to have traveled to a monkeypox virus endemic country. The majority of the cases were males, among which 66 reported being gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with men. This is the first sustained human-to-human transmission of monkeypox in the UK, occurring through close contacts, including sexual networks. Ongoing efforts are being made to improve case identification and prevent further transmission.

Clinical features and management of human monkeypox: a retrospective observational study in the UK

Hugh Adler et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively observed the clinical course of monkeypox in seven patients in the UK from 2018 to 2021. The study found that prolonged PCR positivity led to isolation of five patients for more than 3 weeks. Three patients treated with brincidofovir developed elevated liver enzymes, leading to termination of the therapy. One patient treated with tecovirimat experienced no adverse effects and had a shorter duration of viral shedding and illness compared to the other six patients.

The virology of human monkeypox virus (hMPXV): A brief overview

Edouard Lansiaux et al.

Summary: Human monkeypox virus (hMPXV), a neglected zoonotic pathogen closely associated with smallpox virus, spreads mainly through close contact with infected animals or humans. Although it has been endemic in parts of Africa, recent outbreaks have occurred in countries outside Africa due to increased trade, tourism, and travel. The 2022 outbreak is puzzling due to the lack of epidemiological connection and the possibility of sexual transmission. Limited understanding of the virus's invasion mechanisms highlights the importance of comprehending viral-immune interactions for the development of effective therapeutics and preventive measures.
