The Male Mouse Meiotic Cilium Emanates from the Mother Centriole at Zygotene Prior to Centrosome Duplication

Pablo Lopez-Jimenez et al.

Summary: Cilia play important roles in the airways and reproductive system as motile cilia beat to displace extracellular fluids, while primary cilia function as sensory organelles detecting signals from the external environment. Dysfunction of cilia is associated with genetic diseases and some types of cancer. In mouse meiosis, solitary cilia were found in zygotene spermatocytes, suggesting a potential sensory role affecting cyst function during prophase I.

Strategies for meiotic sex chromosome dynamics and telomeric elongation in Marsupials

Laia Marin-Gual et al.

Summary: The study reveals the features of meiotic cell division in marsupials, particularly the strategies of sex chromosome pairing, recombination, and telomere homeostasis. The researchers found that marsupials have non-canonical meiotic strategies, including alternative mechanisms for controlling telomere length in the paternal parent. These findings provide new insights into the diversity of meiotic strategies in mammals.

Incomplete lineage sorting and phenotypic evolution in marsupials

Shaohong Feng et al.

Summary: Incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) can lead to incongruences between gene trees and species trees during rapid speciation events. Through phylogenomic analyses, it has been discovered that the South American monito del monte is the sister lineage of all Australian marsupials, despite a portion of its genome being more similar to the Diprotodontia. Conflicting phylogenetic signals across the whole genome are consistent with morphological variation among extant marsupials. Furthermore, hundreds of genes have been found to encode the same amino acids in non-sister species due to stochastic fixation during ILS. Functional experiments have provided evidence of how ILS directly contributes to hemiplasy in morphological traits established during rapid marsupial speciation approximately 60 million years ago.

PRDM9 losses in vertebrates are coupled to those of paralogs ZCWPW1 and ZCWPW2

Maria Izabel A. Cavassim et al.

Summary: By using a phylogenetic approach, researchers identified potential genes interacting with PRDM9, including ZCWPW1 and ZCWPW2, which facilitate double strand break repair. These findings highlight the important role of PRDM9 in recombination and provide insights for further investigation of its function.

The ecology and evolution of the monito del monte, a relict species from the southern South America temperate forests

Francisco E. Fonturbel et al.

Summary: The arboreal marsupial monito del monte is a key species in the temperate rainforest, as it acts as the main seed disperser for endemic plants. It is also one of the few hibernating mammals in South America, able to reduce energy expenditure during winter. Despite low reproductive rates, this marsupial shows high densities due to its unique habitat. However, immediate actions are needed to protect the species from habitat destruction and climate change.

Principles of 3D chromosome folding and evolutionary genome reshuffling in mammals

Lucia Alvarez-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This article describes the principles of studying the similarities and differences in genomic interactions between species and presents the patterns of 3D genome folding in vertebrates and lineage-specific patterns of genome reshuffling. By identifying different patterns of chromosome folding, reconstructing ancestral genomes, detecting lineage-specific chromosome rearrangements, and analyzing the dynamics of genome reshuffling, the article explores the interplay between chromatin higher-order organization and therian genome evolution, and proposes a hypothesis to explain the influence of chromatin folding on evolutionary patterns of genome reshuffling.

Meiotic chromosome dynamics and double strand break formation in reptiles

Laia Marin-Gual et al.

Summary: This study compares the regulation of meiotic prophase I in reptiles by examining four species. The results show that meiosis progression is highly conserved in reptiles, with telomeres clustering forming the bouquet, promoting homologous pairing and synapsis. Low levels of meiotic double strand breaks were also detected in all taxa, providing new insights into reptile meiosis.

Meiosis and beyond - understanding the mechanistic and evolutionary processes shaping the germline genome

Roberta Bergero et al.

Summary: The separation of germ cell populations from the soma plays a crucial role in genetic inheritance and evolutionary transition to multicellularity. Molecular processes affecting the germline genome, such as segregation, recombination, mutation, and selection, can alter allele frequencies and potentially deviate from Mendelian inheritance. The use of new sequencing technologies has opened up opportunities to delve into the micro-evolutionary processes occurring at the germline genome level.

The impact of chromosomal fusions on 3D genome folding and recombination in the germ line

Covadonga Vara et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of chromosomal fusions on the higher-order chromatin organization and recombination landscapes in mammalian germ cells. Results show that chromosomal fusions alter the nuclear architecture during meiosis, affecting heterologous interactions and chromosome synapsis. These disturbances in topology also reshape landscapes of recombination, indicating a significant impact on genome function and fertility.

Meiotic Behavior of Achiasmate Sex Chromosomes in the African Pygmy Mouse Mus mattheyi Offers New Insights into the Evolution of Sex Chromosome Pairing and Segregation in Mammals

Ana Gil-Fernandez et al.

Summary: X and Y chromosomes in mammals differ in size and gene content due to an evolutionary process, with the Y chromosome undergoing differentiation and degeneration. The pseudoautosomal region (PAR) allows partial synapsis and reciprocal recombination of the sex chromosomes during meiosis, ensuring their segregation. The African pygmy mouse Mus mattheyi has completely differentiated sex chromosomes, with delayed pairing and unique protein dynamics, suggesting potential impact on sex chromosome divergence and transmission.
