Discrete element method simulation of energy dissipation mechanisms of HMX explosive particles under drop-weight impact

Shaowei Sun et al.

Summary: The developed thermal-mechanical coupling model based on the discrete element method (DEM) effectively captures the energy dissipation of HMX explosive particles during drop-weight impact. Simulation results show that energy dissipation increases with drop-weight height, particle size, and moment of inertia of particle, but decreases when sample mass increases under the same impact conditions. The dominant contribution to energy dissipation is found to be rolling friction dissipation in the absence of internal defects.

Effects of Particle Size Distribution with Efficient Packing on Powder Flowability and Selective Laser Melting Process

Zachary Young et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the effect of particle size distribution (PSD) on powder flowability and the laser melting process. It was found that PSDs near dense packing ratios significantly reduce flowability and powder beds made of powders with dense packing ratios exhibit larger build height during laser melting.

Is high-speed powder spreading really unfavourable for the part quality of laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing?

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of powder spreading speed in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing. The results show that although high-speed powder spreading reduces the packing density of powder layers in single-layer experiments, it is successful in producing high-quality samples with better mechanical properties, including improved fatigue life, in multilayer LPBF processes.

Factors determining the flowability and spreading quality of gas-atomized Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb powders in powder bed fusion additive manufacturing

Seungkyun Yim et al.

Summary: This study suggests the use of mechanical ball milling to improve the flowability and spreadability of gas-atomized (GA) Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb powder in powder bed fusion additive manufacturing. The deformation mechanism of the GA powder differs depending on the ball milling media. Al2O3 ball milling mainly causes surface grinding, while WC ball milling leads to pulverization due to higher impact force. After Al2O3 and WC ball milling, the flowability of the GA powder under dynamic conditions improves due to decreased cohesive force and the packing density increases due to rapid energy dissipation, minimized wall effect, and void filling effect.

Numerical investigation of consolidation mechanism in powder bed fusion considering layer characteristics during multilayer process

Chaochao Wu et al.

Summary: The powder bed fusion process for manufacturing complex metallic parts is rapidly maturing, with modeling and simulation strategies being implemented to optimize the process. The integrated simulation approach developed in this study incorporates stochastic powder deposition and selective melting to understand the consolidation mechanism. Results show that layer thickness remains relatively stable during the multilayer additive process and that inter- and intra-layer bonding play crucial roles in printing quality.

Controlling factors determining flowability of powders for additive manufacturing: A combined experimental and simulation study

Yufan Zhao et al.

Summary: Powder flowability plays a crucial role in additive manufacturing, influenced by particle size distribution, particle morphology, and surface features. Experimental evaluation and numerical simulations on Inconel 718 alloy powders revealed that PREP powder exhibited the best flowability due to high particle sphericity and thin surface oxide film. Control of environmental factors during handling can lead to a natural advantage of PREP over GA and PA in terms of flowability.
