A review of Gum Metal: Developments over the years and new perspectives

Murillo Romero da Silva et al.

Summary: Gum Metals are a type of beta-Ti alloys with non-toxic elements, low elastic modulus, good formability, and excellent biocompatibility. New processing routes and alloy compositions have been proposed to expand the properties and applications of Gum Metal. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive review that summarizes and discusses the development of Gum Metal.

Quantification and prediction of lack-of-fusion porosity in the high porosity regime during laser powder bed fusion of Ti-6Al-4V

Patcharapit Promoppatum et al.

Summary: This study compares three common strategies to measure porosity in additively manufactured metals, highlighting the differences between the Archimedes method and the micrograph-based approach. It is found that the Archimedes method measures total porosity while the micrograph method measures effective porosity, leading to divergent predictions at higher void fractions. Additionally, a geometric model for porosity prediction is implemented and proven to show good agreement with numerical simulations and experimental measurements.

Microstructural and mechanical optimization of selective laser melted Ti6Al4V lattices: Effect of hot isostatic pressing

Xingchen Yan et al.

Summary: Ti6Al4V triply periodic minimal surface and trabecular lattices were manufactured using selective laser melting (SLM) and investigated after hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) treatment. The HIPing treatment had limited influence on pore elimination when the pore diameters were larger than 30μm. The microstructural anisotropy was effectively eliminated after HIPing and the energy absorption capacity significantly improved due to the transformation induced plasticity effect of alpha + beta laths formation. The fracture mechanism was altered from the brittle-dominated quasi-cleavage mode to ductility-dominated mode.

Cryogenic tensile properties and deformation behavior of a superhigh strength metastable beta titanium alloy Ti-15Mo-2Al

M. C. Zang et al.

Summary: The cryogenic tensile properties and deformation behavior of a metastable beta-Ti alloy Ti-15Mo-2Al were investigated, revealing superhigh ultimate tensile strength at 77 K and 20 K. The alloy shows high elongation-to-fracture at 77 K but drops sharply at 20 K, with enhanced work hardening rate and tensile strength at 77 K due to dynamic Hall-Patch effect. A serrated deformation occurs at 20 K, and cryogenic applications of the alloy are proposed to be feasible at temperatures not lower than 77 K.

Material-structure-performance integrated laser-metal additive manufacturing

Dongdong Gu et al.

Summary: The advancement of laser-metal additive manufacturing has enabled the printing of multimaterial/multifunctional designs to meet the increasing demand from industries such as aviation, aerospace, automobile manufacturing, and energy production. By integrating material-structure-performance, major improvements in performance and function can be achieved through the right materials printed in the right positions and unique structures printed for unique functions. This approach exemplifies the revolution of design and manufacturing strategies in additive manufacturing.
