Methodology to design and optimise dispersed continuous carbon fibre composites parts by fused filament fabrication

D. Garoz Gomez et al.

Summary: This article proposes a novel methodology to design, manufacture and optimise structural parts with mechanical behaviour adapted to applications. The 3D printing technology based on FFF allows for the exact setup of the continuous reinforcement orientation. The mechanical properties of the 3D printer laminates have been enhanced via pressurised post-processing, which has been validated through virtual testing.

Hybrid additive manufacturing of polymer composites reinforced with buckypapers and short carbon fibres

Bartosz Mikolaj Gackowski et al.

Summary: A new hybrid additive manufacturing method is proposed to simplify the preparation of cost-effective polymer composites reinforced with short fibers and nanotubes by controlling the weight percentage and number of buckypapers. Improvement in mechanical properties of the materials can be achieved through this method. Additionally, the failure mechanisms of the composites and potential future applications are discussed.

Enhanced tensile strength of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene composite specimens fabricated by overheat fused filament fabrication printing

Thang Q. Tran et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of overheat fused filament fabrication (FFF) to enhance the tensile strength and structure of CF/ABS and GF/ABS specimens. The overheat printing process improves diffusion and interfacial bonding between composite rasters, leading to reduced porosity and increased mechanical performance.

Processing and characterization of tailorable 3D-printed acrylonitrile butadiene styrene composites with hybrid buckypapers

Bartosz Mikolaj Gackowski et al.

Summary: In this work, a hybrid additive manufacturing process was used to incorporate hybrid buckypapers into an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene matrix. The composites reinforced with hybrid buckypapers showed improved mechanical properties compared to neat ABS, and further improvement was observed after modifying the buckypapers with epoxy or thermoplastic polyurethane binders. The porosity of the composites was reduced after post-treatment, and the microstructure and mechanical properties depended on the weight fraction of binders.

A Post-Processing Method for Improving the Mechanical Properties of Fused-Filament-Fabricated 3D-Printed Parts

Lorenzo Malagutti et al.

Summary: Fused-filament fabrication is a popular 3D printing technique, but its mechanical properties limit its use in structural applications. Post-processing methods, such as remelting and compaction, can improve mechanical properties and make the material more isotropic.

Printed Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube-Based Joule Heating Devices Integrated as Functional Laminae in Advanced Composites

George Karalis et al.

Summary: This study presents the design and fabrication of novel printed single-wall carbon nanotube electrothermal Joule heating devices, which are integrated into carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite laminates to provide multifunctionality with efficient and stable performance. The devices demonstrate efficient out-of-oven curing of thermoset matrix and provide additional functions such as deicing and self-sensing, making them suitable for applications in energy and transport sectors. The modular design also allows for large-area applications via interconnected arrays of printed devices.
