Acute and persistent effects of commonly used antibiotics on the gut microbiome and resistome in healthy adults

Winston E. Anthony et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively analyzed the dynamics of the gut microbiota in healthy adult volunteers before, during, and 6 months after receiving antibiotic treatment. The results showed that antibiotics led to changes in species diversity, resistome, and metabolic output, and delayed the recovery of species richness. A subset of volunteers experienced a persistent reduction in microbiome diversity after antibiotics.

Low vitamin D concentrations and BMI are causal factors for primary biliary cholangitis: A mendelian randomization study

Honglin Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the causal relationship between smoking, alcohol use, BMI, vitamin D levels, and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) using genetic instrument variants. The results show that BMI and serum vitamin D levels are independent causal factors for PBC, suggesting that increasing vitamin D levels and adopting a healthy lifestyle could be cost-effective measures for early intervention of PBC.

Shogo Kitahata et al.

Summary: The study investigated alterations in the small intestinal mucosa-associated microbiota (MAM) in patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), revealing an overgrowth of Sphingomonadaceae and Pseudomonas that may be associated with the pathogenesis and pathological development of PBC.

peakPantheR, an R package for large-scale targeted extraction and integration of annotated metabolic features in LC-MS profiling datasets

Arnaud M. Wolfer et al.

Summary: peakPantheR is an R package designed for targeted extraction and integration of annotated features from LC-MS profiling experiments. It utilizes chromatographic and spectral databases as well as prior information of sample matrix composition to generate interpretable metabolic phenotypic datasets and power workflows for real-time data quality assessment.

The Serum Proteome and Ursodeoxycholic Acid Response in Primary Biliary Cholangitis

Ben Barron-Millar et al.

Summary: The UK-PBC study aimed to explore the biological basis of UDCA nonresponse in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and identified a set of serum chemokines potentially related to cellular senescence with significant differential expression between responders and nonresponders. These proteins have the potential to serve as biomarkers for high-risk disease identification and should be further evaluated for their clinical utility in prospective studies.

Alterations in microbiota and their metabolites are associated with beneficial effects of bile acid sequestrant on icteric primary biliary Cholangitis

Bo Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant individual variability in the therapeutic effects of cholestyramine in icteric PBC patients. Differences in gut microbial composition and metabolites were observed between patients with superior remission (SR) and inferior remission (IR). Patients in the SR group showed enrichment of specific bacterial species producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), while the IR group exhibited an increase in Klebsiella pneumonia.

Short-chain fatty acid and fecal microbiota profiles are linked to fibrosis in primary biliary cholangitis

Craig Lammert et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota and metabolome may play a role in the progression of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). Fecal microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were assessed in PBC patients according to fibrosis, showing differences in fecal composition between different fibrosis levels. Advanced fibrosis was associated with higher levels of fecal acetate and SCFAs, decreased diversity in microbiota, and a distinct community composition.
