Combinatorial, additive and dose-dependent drug-microbiome associations

Sofia K. Forslund et al.

Summary: The study reveals that drugs have a greater explanatory power for variability in host and gut microbiome features than diseases during the transition from a healthy state to cardiometabolic disease. The effects of single medications, their combinations, and additive effects can shift the metabolome and microbiome towards a healthier state. The study also shows a quantitative relationship between the number of antibiotic courses prescribed and progression towards a microbiome state associated with the severity of cardiometabolic disease, providing new hypotheses for drug-host-microbiome interactions.

The potential of serum neurofilament as biomarker for multiple sclerosis

Stefan Bittner et al.

Summary: Blood-based serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) is being investigated as a biomarker for prognosis and treatment response in multiple sclerosis patients. It reflects ongoing inflammatory-driven neuroaxonal damage and has the potential to guide individualized clinical decision-making.

Gut microbiome is associated with multiple sclerosis activity in children

Mary K. Horton et al.

Summary: The study identified specific gut microbes associated with multiple sclerosis activity, including Odoribacter and Butyricicoccus which produce butyrate, as well as specific networks of co-occurring gut microbes. These microbes may influence the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis by modulating amino acid biosynthesis pathways.
