The Allium Derivate Propyl Propane Thiosulfinate Exerts Anti-Obesogenic Effects in a Murine Model of Diet-Induced Obesity

Rebeca Liebana-Garcia et al.

Summary: In this study, propyl propane thiosulfinate (PTS) showed dose-dependent anti-obesogenic effects in a murine model of diet-induced obesity. PTS prevented weight gain, adipocyte enlargement, inflammation, and gut barrier dysfunction caused by the obesogenic diet. The higher dose of PTS also improved glucose metabolism, liver homeostasis, lipid metabolism, and thermogenic capacity of brown adipose tissue.

Dietary supplementation of rutin and rutin-rich buckwheat elevates endogenous glucagon-like peptide 1 levels to facilitate glycemic control in type 2 diabetic mice

Lin-Chien Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that buckwheat and rutin have anti-diabetes effects in T2D mice, lowering blood glucose levels, improving insulin sensitivity, and increasing GLP-1 levels. These effects may be closely associated with the elevation of GLP-1 levels and the improvement of beta-cell function.

The gut microbiota as a versatile immunomodulator in obesity and associated metabolic disorders

Rebeca Liebana-Garcia et al.

Summary: Obesity has become an epidemic linked to energy-dense diets and sedentary lifestyles, with the gut microbiome playing a role in interacting with the host and diet to impact obesity. Understanding how obesogenic diets and the microbiome affect immunity can help design strategies to tackle obesity-related disorders more effectively.

Trans Fatty Acid Intake Induces Intestinal Inflammation and Impaired Glucose Tolerance

Takuro Okamura et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that high intake of trans fatty acids exacerbates metabolic diseases such as diabetes and fatty liver compared to saturated fatty acids. Mice fed with a high-trans fatty acid diet showed elevated blood glucose levels, advanced fatty liver, and intestinal inflammation, as well as altered expression of specific genes related to immunity in the gut. Additionally, the abundance of certain bacteria in the gut was significantly higher in mice fed with high-trans fatty acid diet compared to normal or high-fat, high-sucrose diets, indicating a potential link between trans fatty acids and gut microbiota composition.

Leptin and Obesity: Role and Clinical Implication

Milan Obradovic et al.

Summary: Leptin, a peptide hormone, regulates food intake, body mass, and reproductive function, playing a crucial role in fetal growth, immune responses, angiogenesis, and lipolysis. Leptin resistance can lead to reduced satiety, overconsumption of nutrients, and increased body mass, potentially causing obesity. Combining leptin therapies with sensitizers may help overcome resistance and treat obesity effectively.

Gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with the neonatal gut microbiota and metabolome

Ting Chen et al.

Summary: This study revealed significant changes in the meconium microbiota of neonates born to mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), with a reduction in alpha diversity and alterations in the abundance of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. Metabolomic analysis showed changes in metabolic pathways such as taurine and hypotaurine metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, beta-alanine metabolism, and bile acid biosynthesis in GDM subjects. The findings highlight the impact of maternal factors on early-life metabolism.

Is resistin the master link between inflammation and inflammation-related chronic diseases?

Mohammed Taouis et al.

Summary: Resistin was initially discovered in mice and was found to be related to obesity and insulin resistance as a hormone secreted by adipose tissue. In humans, Resistin is expressed by immune cells, especially macrophages, and is associated with inflammatory responses. Although in mice there is evidence linking Resistin to obesity and insulin resistance, in humans the association is still debated and requires more epidemiological studies. Resistin has also been linked to other chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancers and has been considered as a biological marker in many studies.
