Contextual determinants of participation after stroke: a systematic review of quantitative and qualitative studies

Claire Della Vecchia et al.

Summary: Personal factors, particularly psychological and psychosocial factors, are positively associated with post-stroke participation. Environmental factors, such as support, relationships, and positive attitudes towards patients, are major facilitators of participation, along with physical environment and accessibility to appropriate services. Most of these factors are modifiable and should be addressed to improve patient participation.

A. M. Schott et al.

Summary: After the implementation of four sets of actions in the Rhone County, significant improvements were observed in access to reperfusion therapy for acute ischemic stroke patients, with a strong decrease in in-hospital management times and significant decrease in disability at 12 months. However, reducing pre-hospital times remains a challenge.

Perceived participation and autonomy post-stroke and associated factors: An explorative cross-sectional study

Yuxia Li et al.

Summary: This study explored the perceived participation and autonomy among stroke survivors in Shanghai, China, finding that patients reported low levels of participation and autonomy, influenced by factors such as age, physical function, self-efficacy, social support, and stroke knowledge. The results can help nurses understand the participation among stroke patients better and call for special attention to specific groups with lower participation levels. Further research is needed to explore the causal effects of self-efficacy, coping styles, and social support on post-stroke participation.
