Van der Waals Heteroepitaxy of Air-Stable Quasi-Free-Standing Silicene Layers on CVD Epitaxial Graphene/6H-SiC

Zouhour Ben Jabra et al.

Summary: This study investigates the growth of silicon on a chemically vapor deposited epitaxial graphene substrate and shows that the control of almost defect-free graphene is crucial for the growth of silicene. It is found that large silicene sheets can be formed at low coverages, while dendritic islands of silicon appear at higher coverages.

Microscopic mechanism of hydrogen intercalation: On the conversion of the buffer layer on SiC to graphene

Ryotaro Sakakibara et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the microscopic mechanism of hydrogen penetration and migration on SiC buffer layers during the conversion process into quasi-freestanding graphene. The experimental results showed that hydrogen first locally intercalated and simultaneously on the terrace, then expanded to a larger area, resulting in full graphenization of the buffer layer. Additionally, the steps on the SiC surface were found to hinder the migration of hydrogen at the interface. These findings provide important insights into the hydrogen intercalation mechanism and could contribute to the development of graphene electronics.

Fabrication and mechanism of Pb-intercalated graphene on SiC

Dong Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the fabrication and mechanism of Pb-intercalated graphene (PbG) produced on SiC, showing that Pb intercalation prefers to happen at the interface between buffer layer and SiC substrate. Pb atoms penetrate into buffer layer through point defects, transforming it into an additional graphene layer. PbG regions exhibit regular ordered moire pattern or irregular scattered moire pattern.
