Muscular Function as an Alternative to Identify Cognitive Impairment: A Secondary Analysis From SABE Colombia

Elkin Garcia-Cifuentes et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish the association between motor function (gait speed and handgrip strength) and cognitive performance, and determine cut-off points for identifying cognitive impairment in older adults. The results showed that gait speed and handgrip strength were associated with cognitive performance and could serve as useful screening tools.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the impact of socioeconomic status, demographic characteristics, and other risk factors on the cognitive functioning of adults across all ages in five selected developing countries. The results show that socioeconomic status and lifestyle significantly predict cognitive functioning, and demographic characteristics such as age, type of residency, and self-reported memory difficulty also impact cognitive functioning.

Summary: This study examines the prevalence of Motoric Cognitive Risk Syndrome (MCR) and its relationship with chronic conditions and sociodemographic factors. The results show a prevalence of 10.71% of MCR in Colombian older adults. MCR is associated with increasing age, lower education, mental disorders, history of myocardial infarction, hypertension, and diabetes.

Summary: The study found that Brazilian elderly people with lower educational levels had more cardiometabolic risk factors compared to Norwegian elderly people, including higher BMI, waist circumference, and triglycerides. Conversely, Norwegians at the same education levels exhibited higher systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and handgrip strength.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between physical fitness and cognitive status, finding that older adults with lower handgrip strength and slower gait speed were more likely to have cognitive impairments. Additionally, age was negatively associated with cognitive function. The study also revealed that gait speed and handgrip strength were independent mediators of the detrimental effects of aging on cognitive function.

Predictors of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Performance in Patients with Stroke

Amin Ghaffari et al.

Summary: Basic activities of daily living are the strongest predictor of instrumental activities of daily living performance, followed by age, Trail Making Test (B-A), and depression. Therefore, stroke patients who are more dependent in basic activities of daily living, older in age, with cognitive impairment and depression, are more likely to have poorer performance in instrumental activities of daily living, resulting in less participation in home and community affairs.

Muniza Anum Majoka et al.

Summary: Social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status, education level, employment, body mass index, food security, social engagement, and early-life adversity, have a direct impact on the risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Future efforts should focus on enhancing education, improving socioeconomic conditions, work and neighborhood environments, and eliminating racial discrimination to reduce the incidence of ADRDs.

Summary: Dementia incidence is decreasing, but the advances in population health are uneven. Studies have identified clear disparities in the educational, geographic, and race/ethnic distribution of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Gaps in evidence for interventions may amplify disparities in health and healthcare, while the economic costs for persons living with dementia and their care partners' time are high and may persist into future generations.

Summary: The study focuses on identifying determinants of violence in former members of illegal armed groups in Colombia, and finds that contextual factors are more important than individual factors. Social network adversities, membership identification, and normalization of violence are among the accurate social-contextual predictors, while personality traits and psychiatric symptoms play a lesser role as individual factors.

Summary: The study estimates the prevalence of dementia in a community-dwelling population in Colombia and finds that factors such as age, cardiovascular risks, and socioeconomic disparities contribute to higher odds of dementia. The research supports the cognitive reserve hypothesis on dementia and indicates that women in Latin America are more likely to be affected by socioeconomic disparities that limit their cognitive reserve.
