Nesting behaviour and description of the larva of Alysson spinosus (Panzer, 1801) (Hymenoptera: Bembicidae)

Summary: This paper presents new data on the nesting habits and foraging behavior of the digger wasp Alysson spinosus. The female wasp provisions each cell with around 7-8 hemipteran nymphs or adults as food for the larvae. The nests are built in sandy, shaded areas and consist of a main burrow with multiple brood cells. Both male and female wasps search for honeydew on lilac or small-leaved linden leaves. The nests are often infested by a kleptoparasitic fly, Metopia argyrocephala. The mature larva of Alysson spinosus is similar to that of Alysson melleus but has distinct differences in mandibular tooth shape and setae on the clypeus and labrum.

Life History of Oxybelus variegatus Wesmael, 1852 (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae) with a Description of the Mature Larva

Summary: This study provides the first comprehensive information on the morphology and natural history data of the rare digger wasp Oxybelus variegatus. The mature larva is described for the first time, along with analysis of nesting behavior, nest structure, prey range, phenology, and accompanying kleptoparasites. Findings suggest that this endangered species may inhabit strongly anthropogenic habitats and play a potentially effective role in controlling crop pests such as Delia platura.
