Acesulfame allows the tracing of multiple sources of wastewater and riverbank filtration

Miguel Angel Marazuela et al.

Summary: Aquifers providing drinking water are at risk of contamination from wastewater inputs. This study investigates the use of the sweetener acesulfame potassium as a tracer for wastewater inputs to riverbank filtration sites. The study found that acesulfame potassium concentrations varied seasonally, allowing the identification and characterization of different sources of wastewater inputs to the aquifer. The findings highlight the importance of individually assessing the locations of riverbank infiltration to ensure the safety of drinking water.

Source Apportionment and Geographic Distribution of Heavy Metals and as in Soils and Vegetables Using Kriging Interpolation and Positive Matrix Factorization Analysis

Huiyue Su et al.

Summary: Food security and cultivated land utilization can be seriously affected by soil pollution caused by heavy metals (HM). Therefore, it is important to identify the pollution sources in farmland to effectively control soil pollution and enhance soil quality. This research collected soil samples, vegetable samples, irrigation water samples, and fertilizer samples from a district in Tianjin, China, to determine the accumulation and ecological risks of HMs. Kriging interpolation and positive matrix factorization (PMF) methods were used to identify the sources of soil HMs. The results showed that the soil HMs in the study area were moderately contaminated, with Cd pollution being more severe. The distribution of HM contaminants was non-homogeneous, with higher concentrations in the southwest where metal manufacturing industries are located. The results suggest that industrial activities are the main source of soil HM accumulation, emphasizing the need for government strategies to reduce industrial point-source pollution.

Heavy Metals in Soils From Intense Industrial Areas in South China: Spatial Distribution, Source Apportionment, and Risk Assessment

Chuanghong Su et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the heavy metal pollution in soils from an area with intensive industrial activities in South China. The results showed that the concentrations of Cd, As, Hg, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were higher than background levels in both surface and subsurface soils. The primary sources of heavy metals were identified as agriculture, industry, transportation, and nature. Anthropogenic activities significantly influenced the spatial distribution of heavy metals in soils. The health risks of heavy metal exposure via different routes were found to be at an unacceptable level, with higher risks for adults compared to children. Therefore, monitoring heavy metal pollution in soils in rapidly developing areas, such as South China, is of great importance.
