Evaluation of Agronomic Characteristics, Disease Incidence, Yield Performance, and Aflatoxin Accumulation among Six Peanut Varieties (Arachis hypogea L.) Grown in Kenya

Loise Njoki et al.

Summary: Diseases are decreasing the potential yield of groundnut in Kenya by less than 50%. This study evaluated the agronomic characteristics, disease incidence, yield performance, and aflatoxin accumulation in six peanut varieties. The results showed that the newly improved varieties had lower disease rates, lower aflatoxin levels, and higher yields.

Advanced mycotoxin control and decontamination techniques in view of an increased aflatoxin risk in Europe due to climate change

Martina Loi et al.

Summary: Aflatoxins, produced by Aspergillus spp., are toxic secondary metabolites found worldwide in staple food and feed commodities. They are known to be carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic, posing a serious threat to human and animal health. The economic and trade sectors are also significantly impacted. Although various models and datasets related to aflatoxins in maize have been developed, they have not yet been connected. Therefore, this review aims to investigate the effects of environmental factors on aflatoxin production due to climate change and discuss present-day and novel decontamination techniques to address the increased aflatoxin risk in Europe.

Induced Systemic Resistance for Improving Plant Immunity by Beneficial Microbes

Yiyang Yu et al.

Summary: Beneficial microorganisms can improve the health and growth of plants by inducing an enhanced resistance state called induced systemic resistance (ISR), which provides protection against a broad range of pathogens. Previously, it was believed that ISR signaling primarily relied on the jasmonic acid and ethylene pathways, but recent research has shown the involvement of salicylic acid and small RNAs in regulating ISR.

Biological Control of Plant Pathogens: A Global Perspective

Rachid Lahlali et al.

Summary: The increase in world population has resulted in higher demands for agricultural products. However, the use of chemical pesticides has caused concerns over their impact on human health and the environment. As a result, researchers have turned to biological controls using beneficial microorganisms, but the development of biofungicides has faced challenges. This review focuses on the gap between the screening of biological control agents and the availability of marketed products, and highlights the obstacles in terms of efficacy and legislation procedures.

Fungal Pathogens and Seed Storage in the Dry State

Isaura Martin et al.

Summary: Seeds can carry various microorganisms, especially fungi, which can have negative effects on seed quality and longevity while potentially spreading diseases. Seed storage is an effective method for conserving plant genetic resources, but it can also provide favorable conditions for the survival of seed-associated fungi. Early detection and identification of these fungi are crucial for preserving high-quality seeds and preventing pathogen dissemination.

Plant Growth Promotion and Biocontrol by Endophytic and Rhizospheric Microorganisms From the Tropics: A Review and Perspectives

Paulo Teixeira Lacava et al.

Summary: The rapid population growth and demand for food have led to deforestation in tropical forests, causing land degradation and loss of biodiversity. To ensure food security and preserve natural resources, sustainable crop systems in the tropics have gained attention globally. Utilizing beneficial plant-associated microorganisms can improve crop yield, control pests and diseases, and alleviate plant stress, providing a promising sustainable solution for modern agriculture and the environment.

Sensitivity of Aspergillus flavus Isolates from Peanut Seeds in Georgia to Azoxystrobin, a Quinone outside Inhibitor (QoI) Fungicide

Md Emran Ali et al.

Summary: Aspergillus flavus infects peanuts and produces carcinogenic aflatoxin. In 2020, peanut seeds in Georgia had low germination due to contamination. Aspergillus isolates showed resistance to azoxystrobin, necessitating the development of new seed treatment fungicides.

Inhibition of Aspergillus flavus growth and aflatoxins production on peanuts over α-Fe2O3 nanorods under sunlight irradiation

Di Sun et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated a green and economical method to control Aspergillus flavus on peanuts, with alpha-Fe2O3 nanorods showing efficient inhibition of fungal growth and spore germination under sunlight irradiation. The photocatalytic effect of alpha-Fe2O3 resulted in significant reduction of aflatoxin production without affecting peanut quality.
