Evaluation of the antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of crude extracts from marine Chlorella sp.

Umme Tamanna Ferdous et al.

Summary: This study explored the antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity of marine Chlorella sp. extracts isolated from the Malaysian coastal area. The methanolic extract showed the highest antioxidant activity and reduced the viability of human breast cancer cells. GC/MS analysis revealed the presence of diterpenes and fatty acid esters, which have antioxidant and anticancer properties. This study suggests that marine Chlorella sp. has promising pharmaceutical and nutraceutical potential.

Jellyfish Acromitus flagellatus (Maas) nematocyst venom-mediated biogenic synthesis of gold nanoparticles and its anti-proliferative effects

S. Amreen Nisa et al.

Summary: The study investigates the production of gold nanoparticles using jellyfish venom and their effectiveness in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. The nanoparticles were characterized using various techniques and were found to have spherical and triangular shapes with different sizes. The results of the MTT assay showed that the venom-mediated nanoparticles significantly reduced the proliferation of MCF-7 cells compared to normal cells.

Enhanced production of bioactive compounds from marine microalgae Tetraselmis tetrathele under salinity and light stresses: A two-stage cultivation strategy

Elham Nezafatian et al.

Summary: This study found that salinity stress and light intensity stress can enhance the pigment contents and antioxidant capacity of Tetraselmis tetrathele. The highest pigments content was obtained in cultures under salinity stress illuminated using fluorescent light. The best inhibitory concentration for scavenging ABTS radicals was found in ethanol extract and cultures under red LED light stress. The highest antioxidant capacity in FRAP assay was found in ethanol extract and cultures under salinity stress illuminated using fluorescent light.

Chemical Compositions and Experimental and Computational Modeling of the Anticancer Effects of Cnidocyte Venoms of Jellyfish Cassiopea andromeda and Catostylus mosaicus on Human Adenocarcinoma A549 Cells

Afshin Zare et al.

Summary: Currently, there is a growing interest in using natural resources, such as oceans and marine environments, for the treatment of various types of cancers. This study focused on the anticancer properties of the venom from Cassiopea andromeda and Catostylus mosaicus jellyfish species against human pulmonary adenocarcinoma cells. The results showed that both venoms exhibited dose-dependent anti-tumoral effects and induced apoptosis in the cancer cells.
