Effect of Mixotrophy on Lipid Content and Fatty Acids Methyl Esters Profile by Chromochloris zofingiensis Grown in Media Containing Sugarcane Molasses

Lorenzo Vitali et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of sugarcane molasses on the lipid content and fatty acids methyl ester (FAME) profile of Chromochloris zofingiensis. The results showed that adding molasses improved the biomass concentration, lipid content, and lipid productivity of the microalgae. The highest values were obtained with 2 g/L of molasses. The FAME profile revealed a high composition of C16-C18 fatty acids, with no significant differences among the different concentrations of molasses tested. Unsaturated fatty acids reached the highest portion when using 2 g/L of molasses.

Effect of different salinity on the growth performance and proximate composition of isolated indigenous microalgae species

Noorazilah Haris et al.

Summary: The study focused on isolating and identifying three indigenous microalgae species with high growth performance from Setiu wetlands, Terengganu, Malaysia, namely Chlorella vulgaris, Tetraselmis chuii, and Isochrysis galbana, over a 16-day culture period. These microalgae exhibited the highest optical density and specific growth rate, as well as fluorescence intensity for lipid, carotenoid, and chlorophyll a content. Salinity variations were found to significantly impact the growth and biochemical composition of these microalgae species.

Salt induced oxidative stress alters physiological, biochemical and metabolomic responses of green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Soufiane Fal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological, biochemical, and metabolomic changes in the microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under salt stress. The results showed that salt stress resulted in decreased growth rate and chlorophyll levels, as well as increased ROS generation and lipid peroxidation. Moreover, the microalga exhibited increased carbohydrate and lipid accumulation, along with higher levels of carotenoids, polyphenols, and osmoprotectant molecules. The study also revealed changes in enzyme activities and the accumulation of specific molecules related to membrane remodeling and stress resistance.

Farhana Bibi et al.

Summary: Microalgae have been identified as a promising alternative feedstock for carbon-neutral biofuel production. This study aims to explore the effects of various abiotic stresses on microalgal biofuel production and review strategies to induce lipid production in microalgae. The manipulation of abiotic growth factors has been shown to facilitate high lipid and biomass accumulation in microalgae cultivation. The commercialization of algae-based biofuels through cost-effective and multi-product generation routes remains valid in the context of global decarbonization movement.

Enhanced growth of Chromochloris zofingiensis through the transition of nutritional modes

Anupreet Kaur Chowdhary et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of nutritional mode transitions on the green microalga Chromochloris zofingiensis. It was found that heterotrophically precultured cells showed reduced growth and biomass productivity in prolonged dark cultures. On the other hand, heterotrophic cells exhibited higher growth rates when irradiated in the autotrophic and mixotrophic biomass production phases. The mixotrophic biomass production phase showed the highest maximum biomass productivity.
