Investigating the effects of combined bio-enhancement and bio-stimulation on the cleaning of hexadecane-contaminated soils

Mohammad Reza Samaei et al.

Summary: This study investigated hexadecane removal in slurry bioreactors using bio-enhancement and bio-stimulation, finding that microbial consortium was more effective in removing hexadecane compared to pure bacteria, and that high salt levels inhibited biodegradation. Increasing soil-to-water ratio and initial hexadecane concentration were found to be crucial factors influencing the biodegradation rate.

Bioballs carrying a syntrophic Rhodococcus and Mycolicibacterium consortium for simultaneous sorption and biodegradation of fuel oil in contaminated freshwater

Kallayanee Naloka et al.

Summary: Three nonpathogenic effective bacterial hydrocarbon degraders were isolated from PAH-enriched sediments, showing broad substrate specificities and potential for bioremediation. The mixed bacterial consortium immobilized on plastic balls achieved efficient degradation and removal of fuel oil, highlighting the cooperative interaction between Rhodococcus and Mycolicibacterium for bioremediation applications.

Biodegradation of hydrocarbons and biosurfactants production by a newly halotolerant Pseudomonas sp. strain isolated from contaminated seawater

Dorra Hentati et al.

Summary: The Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain NAPH6 isolated from contaminated seawater in Tunisia has shown promising capabilities in degrading naphthalene and aliphatic hydrocarbons, as well as synthesizing biological surfactants BS-NAPH6. The biosurfactant exhibited stability against various environmental factors and biological properties, making it a potential candidate for environmental and biomedical applications.

Effects of Dispersants and Biosurfactants on Crude-Oil Biodegradation and Bacterial Community Succession

Gareth E. Thomas et al.

Summary: This study found that dispersants and biosurfactants can significantly reduce the interfacial surface tension between water and oil within 24 hours, promoting an increase in the abundance of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria and the rate of hydrocarbon biodegradation. Some dispersants or biosurfactants can selectively enhance specific bacterial genera, particularly rhamnolipid which shows compatibility with the Pseudomonas genus.

Bovine Manure as a Rich Source for Isolation of Halo-Tolerant Bacterial Strains Capable of PAHs Biodegradation in Slurry Bioreactor

Neamat Jaafarzadeh et al.

Summary: This study isolated three halo-tolerant bacterial strains capable of degrading PAHs from bovine manure, and found that their consortium had a higher efficiency in phenanthrene biodegradation compared to pure culture. The biodegradation efficiencies of total petroleum hydrocarbons were significantly influenced by different soil/water ratios during the 35-day experiment.

Petroleum Contaminated Seawater Detoxification in Microcosm by Halotolerant Consortium Isolated from Persian Gulf

Mahboobeh Dehvari et al.

Summary: The study investigated bioremediation of petroleum contaminated seawater from the Persian Gulf using a combination of native halotolerant bacterial consortium, biostimulation with added nutrients and surfactant, and bioaugmentation with hydrocarbon degrading strains. Results showed that bioaugmentation had the highest total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal efficiency, followed by biostimulation with surfactant addition. Toxicity evaluation revealed the least toxic rates for the bioaugmentation based bioreactor.
