Qualitative analysis of tar based on tar sampling conditions for empty fruit bunch gasification

Sang Yeop Lee et al.

Summary: The generation of tar during biomass gasification is a common issue that needs to be controlled for the proper design of the gasification process. This study evaluated the effect of different sampling conditions on tar composition and quality during gasification of empty fruit bunch (EFB), and found that benzene was the main component of the generated tar. It is recommended to focus on benzene control in the design of the syngas cleaning unit and suggested some reliable sampling parameters.

Utilization of biomass waste for activated carbon production by steam gasification in a rotary reactor: experimental and theoretical approach

Shanhui Zhao et al.

Summary: Cheap activated carbon for dioxin adsorption in waste incinerator was produced by steam gasification of waste plywood, pinewood, and coconut shell. The yield and properties of activated carbon were influenced by temperature, steam flow rate, and activation time. Experimental results showed that plywood activated carbon had a higher yield and similar pore structure as pinewood activated carbon, making it suitable for dioxin adsorption. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM) were used for modeling and optimization of the rotary furnace, which showed that both methods could simulate particle movement in the furnace.

Synergistic effects of blending seafood wastes as Co-pyrolysis feedstock on syngas production and biochar properties

Gihoon Kwon et al.

Summary: By co-pyrolyzing common seafood wastes, chitin and oyster shell, researchers found that adding oyster shell significantly increased the production of H-2 and CO, and facilitated the thermal decomposition of chitin. The biochar produced from co-pyrolysis in different conditions showed varying mineralogical composition and adsorption capabilities, with CO2 biochar exhibiting a higher adsorption capacity.

Numerical modeling of biomass fast pyrolysis by using an improved comprehensive reaction scheme for energy analysis

Thoharudin et al.

Summary: In this study, an improved comprehensive pyrolysis scheme was developed by modifying bio-oil and gas species fractions, increasing carbon fraction in the char, and combining metaplastic decompositions for energy analysis. The model accurately predicted pyrolysis product yields, compositions, and energy distributions, with relative errors of 0.61%, 9.54%, and -3.76% for bio-oil, gas, and char energies, respectively. Energy distributions were mainly influenced by pyrolysis product yields rather than energy density.

The optimization of in-situ tar reduction and syngas production on a 60-kW three-staged biomass gasification system: theoretical and practical approach

Shanhui Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that a well-designed biomass gasification system can improve gasification efficiency and carbon conversion rate, while reducing tar yield. Reasonable air injection methods can enhance the flow field in the furnace and eliminate flow stagnation zones near the wall, benefiting tar cracking in the throat section.

Techno-economic analysis of biomass processing with dual outputs of energy and activated carbon

Li Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the production of activated carbon (AC) and fuel gas using spent mushroom substrate with two different processes, showing that air activation offers economic advantages but requires careful assessment of temperature control and operational stability risks. Flue gas activation is more reliable and beneficial for long-term operation, generating less CO2.

Multi-objective optimization of an integrated biomass waste fixed-bed gasification system for power and biochar co-production

Xin He et al.

Summary: In this study, an integrated biomass waste gasification combined heat and power (CHP) system was simulated and analyzed using a multi-scale first-principles numerical model. A multi-objective optimization framework was formulated to consider economic benefit, greenhouse gas emission, and health impact caused by PM emission. The best-compromised solution from the Pareto front showed economic benefit, CO2 mitigation, and pollutant index score. The impacts of these objectives on decision variables were analyzed through 21 different weighted single-objective problems.
