Impact of anthropogenic and geological factors on groundwater hydrochemistry in the unconfined aquifers of Indo-Gangetic plain

Anant Gautam et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of anthropogenic activities and geological factors on the hydrogeochemical characteristics of groundwater in the Bist-Doab region of Punjab, India. The results show that the groundwater is predominantly of the Ca2+- Mg(2+ )HCO(3)(- )type, and anthropogenic activities accelerate the interaction between rocks and water.

Meta-analysis of uranium contamination in groundwater of the alluvial plains of Punjab, northwest India: Status, health risk, and hydrogeochemical processes

Prafulla Kumar Sahoo et al.

Summary: Despite numerous studies, there are still many knowledge gaps in understanding uranium (U) contamination in alluvial aquifers in Punjab, India. This study compiled a large hydrogeochemical dataset to identify major factors controlling U mobility and enrichment in groundwater. The results showed that shallow groundwaters are more contaminated with U than deeper depths, with salinity and total dissolved solids playing a significant role in U mobilization.

Isotopic Assessment of Groundwater Salinity: A Case Study of the Southwest (SW) Region of Punjab, India

Gopal Krishan et al.

Summary: Due to rapid increases in water demand and irrigation, waterlogging issues have developed in the southwest zone of Punjab, along with a stagnation in saline zone formation due to salinity ingression. This study conducted research in three districts of Punjab, collecting and analyzing groundwater samples to understand the causes of salinity. The results showed that salinity in groundwater is a result of evaporation enrichment and salt dissolution. The study also identified the zone of interaction between aquifers.

Combining downscaled-GRACE data with SWAT to improve the estimation of groundwater storage and depletion variations in the Irrigated Indus Basin (IIB)

Arfan Arshad et al.

Summary: The growth of agricultural production systems is a major driver of groundwater depletion worldwide. Balancing groundwater supply and food production requires localized understanding of groundwater storage and depletion variations in response to diverse cropping systems and surface water availability for irrigation. This study presents a novel spatial water balance approach to improve the distributed estimation of groundwater storage and depletion changes at a spatial scale that can detect the hotspots of groundwater storage variation.

Assessment of groundwater quality and its controlling processes in Bemetara District of Chhattisgarh State, India

M. K. Sharma et al.

Summary: Rapid groundwater withdrawal poses a threat to existing groundwater resources globally, leading to reduced groundwater levels and disrupted hydrogeochemical processes. This study evaluated the suitability of groundwater in Bemetara District, India for drinking purposes, using the water quality index (WQI) method and principal component analysis (PCA). The findings indicated degraded groundwater quality, with high levels of total dissolved solids and sulfate ions exceeding acceptable limits. The study highlights the need for treatment of groundwater in certain areas and provides important data for the design of sustainable groundwater management plans.
