Treatment of laundry wastewater by different processes: Optimization and life cycle assessment

Elisenda Pulido Melian et al.

Summary: Through the study of wastewater from a hotel in the south of Gran Canaria, Spain, we found that coagulation with iron (III) sulphate and Fenton processes could not meet the water reuse standards in Spain, while photo-Fenton and biological treatment showed good results in turbidity and COD removal. However, the effluent from the biological treatment did not meet the COD removal criteria, so a GAC filtration was used for post-treatment. The photo-Fenton process met the criteria for water reuse and the BF + GAC option had lower cost and environmental impacts.

Environmental life cycle assessment of monosodium glutamate production in China: Based on the progress of cleaner production in recent ten years

Jiaying Ding et al.

Summary: China, as the leading producer of monosodium glutamate (MSG), has been evaluated for its environmental impacts during the production process. It was found that the cultivation of maize and the production of MSG have significant environmental effects. However, improvements in cleaner production methods have led to a reduction in environmental impacts. The use of steam, irrigation water, and ammonia volatilization during maize growth were identified as the main factors affecting the environment. Additionally, the choice of data source for maize cultivation also affects the calculated environmental impacts.

The comparative life-cycle environmental effects of chemical feedstock change driven by energy system transition: A case study from China's ethylene glycol industry

Huimin Qian et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of different production routes on the feedstock and environmental burdens of China's chemical manufacturing industry using ethylene glycol production as an example. It finds that replacing coal with shale gas can reduce overall environmental stresses, but also increase certain specific environmental burdens. Scenario analysis further suggests that feedstock change and production growth will increase the environmental burdens of China's ethylene glycol industry in the future.

Water hardness effect on the association and adsorption of cationic cellulose derivative/anionic surfactant mixtures for fabric softener application

Yuqi Li et al.

Summary: The cationic polymer LR400 and anionic surfactant oleate can form different types of associative complexes in aqueous solution, and the addition of Ca2+ ions affects their precipitation behavior. The adsorption of LR400/oleate on silica from solutions of varied Ca2+ concentration produces adsorbed layers with different properties, with the friction coefficient showing dependence on Ca2+ concentration. The study investigates the effect of water hardness on the aggregation and adsorption of softener agents, and correlates the frictional property of the surface with the softening effects, providing insights for fabric softener development and formulation optimization.
