Intense wet-dry cycles weakened the carbon sequestration of soil aggregates in the riparian zone

Kai Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of soil respiration and soil aggregates to intense wet-dry cycles in different land use types in the riparian zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China. The results showed that strong flooding intensity decreased soil aggregate stability and increased soil respiration. Soil aggregate stability had a negative effect on soil respiration, which weakened after intense wet-dry cycles.

Soil texture is an important factor determining how microplastics affect soil hydraulic characteristics

ZiQi Guo et al.

Summary: This case study investigates the influence of microplastics on the hydraulic properties of different soil textures. The results show that addition of microplastics reduces the saturated hydraulic conductivity and water retention capacity of the soil. The effects of microplastics vary depending on the particle size, with larger particles having a weaker impact. The interaction between microplastics and soil also alters the distribution of soil pores.

Microplastics in the soil: A review of distribution, anthropogenic impact, and interaction with soil microorganisms based on meta-analysis

Xinxin You et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) are anthropogenic pollutants that pose a serious threat to soil ecosystems and human health. This study found significant differences in MP size between China and other countries, and identified a link between industrial production and the abundance of polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs). The study also discussed the interaction between soil MPs and ecosystems.

Effects of microplastics on water infiltration in agricultural soil on the Loess Plateau, China

Zihan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of microplastics (polyethylene) on water infiltration in agricultural soil on the Loess Plateau. Results show that the depth of the wetting front and cumulative infiltration exhibit nonlinear changes with microplastics content. An infiltration rate reduction and lowest cumulative infiltration are observed with 0.2% microplastics content. When the content exceeds 0.2%, the formation of macropores promotes preferential flow and water infiltration.
