Thermo-physical properties and microstructural behaviour of biochar-incorporated cementitious material

Dilshad Ali et al.

Summary: Biochar made from different percentages of sawdust was used to replace cement in cementitious materials, resulting in reduced environmental pollutants and landfill waste. Through various tests, it was found that the addition of biochar improved the hydration products, compressive strength, and thermal properties of the cementitious compounds. The 3 wt% replacement showed the best performance among the three different replacements.

Efficient adsorption of anionic azo dyes on porous heterostructured MXene/biomass activated carbon composites: Experiments, characterization, and theoretical analysis via advanced statistical physics models

Hanjing Xue et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of a porous adsorbent, CMAC composite, synthesized from biomass activated carbon and MXene, for the removal of three anionic azo dyes. The CMAC composite, formed through electrostatic self-assembly, effectively enhances the adsorption performance. Experimental results show that CMAC exhibits excellent adsorption efficiency for congo red. The adsorption mechanism can be attributed to the synergistic effect of physical adsorption, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions.

Optimization via response surface methodology of palm kernel shell biochar for supplementary cementitious replacement

Aan Mohammad Nusrat Aman et al.

Summary: The use of sustainable materials in construction industry has been increasing, as studies have proven the negative impact of conventional concrete on the environment. Research on biochar as a supplementary cementitious material has shown enhanced properties of biochar concrete and mortar composite. This study focuses on the physiochemical properties of palm kernel shell biochar and identifies the optimized parameters for its production as a cement substitute. The study also discusses the thermal properties of palm kernel shell biochar affected by pyrolysis factors. The findings support the use of palm waste as a sustainable material in construction.

Amine-grafted walnut shell for efficient removal of phosphate and nitrate

Evans Dovi et al.

Summary: The presence of emerging pollutants like PO43- and NO3- in water bodies has raised global concerns about their impact on water bodies and human health. ACWNS, a novel adsorbent, was found to effectively remove phosphate and nitrate, showing exothermic and spontaneous adsorption. The adsorption mechanism is attributed to electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding, with ACWNS demonstrating a higher attraction towards the ions.

Prototyping a spinning adsorber submerged filter for continuous removal of wastewater contaminants

Jose Maria Obon et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel configuration of a bench scale spinning adsorber submerged filter, which has good adsorption performance and can operate continuously. By using different particle sizes of activated carbon as adsorbents, wastewater contaminants, such as azorubine, can be effectively removed. For a specific spinning rectangular prism adsorber prototype, operating at a certain rotational speed and adsorbent concentration, it achieves similar removal rates compared to the use of free moving adsorbents.

Investigation of chromate and nitrate removal by adsorption at the surface of an amine-modified cocoa shell adsorbent

Patrick Nkuigue Fotsing et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the successful adsorption of nitrate and chromium ions from contaminated aqueous solutions onto functionalized cocoa shell via chemical grafting. The resulting adsorbent, ECAB-APTES-HCl, showed high removal efficiency for both ions, fitting well with Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms and a pseudo-second order model. Desorption studies revealed effective recovery of the ions in a short period of time, offering a promising method for heavy metal removal from water without energy constraints.
