Landscape management strategies for multifunctionality and social equity

Margot Neyret et al.

Summary: This study provides a tool to quantify the social impact of land-use changes by combining broad ecological data with information on the ecosystem service priorities of multiple stakeholder groups. The research shows that most major land-use changes proposed for Europe could lead to social conflicts and reduced multifunctionality. However, moderate gains in multifunctionality and equity can be achieved by expanding and diversifying forests and de-intensifying grasslands.

Application Framework of Multi-Criteria Methods in Sustainability Assessment

Pawel Ziemba

Summary: In the contemporary literature on sustainability, there is a growing trend of using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methods instead of traditional sustainability indices. This article aims to scientifically analyze the applicability of various MCDA methods in decision-making problems related to sustainability. Based on a literature analysis, the article presents a set of features that determine the possibility of using individual MCDA methods in sustainability problems. The study found that MCDA methods, especially those based on arithmetic aggregation of criteria and fuzzy modifications of classical methods, are more commonly used in sustainability problems than classic sustainability indices. The use of MCDA methods provides more flexibility and functionality in sustainability assessment.

Do differential payments for agri-environment schemes affect the environmental benefits? A case study in the North-Eastern Italy

Fabio Bartolini et al.

Summary: The future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) aims to promote sustainable agricultural systems, maintain biodiversity, and establish measures to counteract climate change, with uncertainty surrounding its implementation. A study estimated a composite indicator to track changes at the farm level and assess the impacts of agri-environment climate schemes (AECSs) on management intensity, finding that different payment levels have varying effects.

Ecosystem service trade-offs and synergies under influence of climate and land cover change in an afforested semiarid basin, China

Yifan Wu et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of land use and climate change on water-related ecosystem services in the Luanhe River Basin in China. Results show a significant reduction in these services, with climate change having a greater impact on water yield and soil export, while land use change affects nutrient purification more. Differences in these impacts were observed among sub-watersheds in the LRB due to variations in land use types.

Using fuzzy cognitive maps to identify better policy strategies to valorize organic waste flows: An Italian case study

Piergiuseppe Morone et al.

Summary: In Europe, there is a significant amount of municipal waste available for utilization, with the organic fraction representing a valuable part that can be used to produce value-added products. This study focused on Italy's bioeconomy sector and the use of OFMSW as feedstock, identifying barriers to effective adoption of the CBE and suggesting policy strategies to improve outcomes. Results highlighted that excessive bureaucracy, linear logic, and technology-based solutions ignoring waste planning complexities were key factors influencing the implementation of CBE in Italy, with a policy mix combining economic support and waste collection system improvements showing the most positive impact on outcomes.

Mapping and assessment of landscape aesthetic quality in Lithuania

Marius Kalinauskas et al.

Summary: Mapping and assessing landscape aesthetic quality (LAQ) at the national level is crucial for providing valuable insights to scientists and policymakers, facilitating international environmental management policies. While a generalised view based on unified methodological standards allows for comparing LAQ between countries, the challenge lies in reliably applying consensus-based methodologies in a broader geographic region. More studies are needed to assess LAQ at the national level.

Biodiversity and the challenge of pluralism

Unai Pascual et al.

Summary: The lack of progress in reversing the declining global trend in biodiversity is partly due to a mismatch in how living nature is conceived and valued, leading to hindrances in protecting biodiversity. Addressing this problem calls for a pluralistic perspective on biodiversity, considering the use of the concept, willingness to expand its ambit, and engagement with various drivers of change.

Multi-criteria decision making methods to address rural land allocation problems: A systematic review

Sintayehu Legesse Gebre et al.

Summary: Land allocation is a significant issue in land use planning research, involving activities that aim to maximize environmental, economic, and social benefits. The use of Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods has increased over the past two decades, particularly in Europe and China. AHP is frequently used for multi-attribute land allocation problems related to ecotourism and ecosystem management, while LP and SA methods are predominantly utilized for optimizing complex agricultural and forest land allocation problems.
