How microbes can, and cannot, be used to assess soil health

Noah Fierer et al.

Summary: Healthy soils are crucial for the health of ecosystems, economies, and human populations. Soil health is recognized as important for assessment and guiding management strategies, but measuring it accurately, especially considering the role of microbes, poses challenges. Despite the widespread use of microbe-based metrics as indicators of soil health, many existing microbial measurements may not provide credible inferences. This review explores microbial indices used in assessing soil health and suggests ways to better utilize microbial information for relevant and actionable assessments.

Comparative Effect of Fertilization Practices on Soil Microbial Diversity and Activity: An Overview

Muhammad Shehryar Sabir et al.

Summary: The three main fertilization practices, conventional, organic, and bio-fertilization, have varying impacts on soil microbial activity and diversity. Excessive use of inorganic fertilizers can lead to soil degradation, while organic and bio-fertilizers contribute to increased organic carbon input and microbial diversity in the soil.
